My first overclock!

Hi, this is my first real try at overclocking so please let me know if i need to change something or if i can push it harder.

Current system is:

C2D E6400 stock 2.13ghz
P5N-E
2x 1gb Geil 6400 Cas4 5-5-5-24 (i think thats what the mobo said stock)
640mb 8800 GTS
2x250gb Seagate

So the overclocks....

Currently got the CPU running at 3.0ghz

Temps at start up are 25-30c

Temps after 30 mins of Prime small FFT and Blend <45c


Can i push this more? Anything i can change?

As much as you want, as long as you remember to thoroughly test it for stability each time, you can keep going until it becomes unstable or such.
 
I have the same cpu as you: E6400, 965P DS4, Corsair 6400c4, HD2900 pro
and i have had mine at 420 FSB, with less volts than you so you can definitly push it further :D

I'm running high volts because i haven't done the pencil volt bridge.

Should i edit the FSB ratio?
 
That is a very high vcore, what are you measuring temps in, if not coretemp then download it and see what it reports.

Im not sure what you mean by FSB ratio, as i have only used gigabyte boards, but im guessing it means the fsb/ram ratio, if thats what it is then definitly change it, ideally u want fsb of about 440, then u can have your ram on 1:1 ratio this will oc the ram to 880, you could possibly go further but im not sure about your mobo as i only use gigabyte boards, for mine to get to 420 i had to up the fsb voltage 0.1v and the north bridge voltage up a notch. vcore was 1.48v(even that is pretty high, i could probably lower it)
 
Be wary of two things:

Speedfan never got close to accurate readings on my old Prescott;

BIOS's can read temperature VERY wrong also, which is my current concern with my CPU.
 
Oh just a note, like said above (thought something looked odd), get a 1:1 ratio. Up FSB to 400, with DRAM frequency at 800 (DDR).

I'm not so experienced at this, but i believe this means DDR2800 ram will run at it's ideal frequency, the CPU will run at 3.6GHz and the FSB will be 1600, meaning it uses the full speed of the RAM. At the moment (again i think this is right), your RAM is at 800mhz, but you have 1500mhz FSB (so thats 2 x 800 bottlenecking into 1500?).
 
I'm just about to play with the memory now.

I rechecked the bios and my vcore is at 1.4v, for some reason cpu-z is saying its 1.5.
 
I'm not going to bother messing with my memory, should get to 3.6ghz easy enough just increasing FSB (CPU Frequency in bios) to 400, setting it to auto would do the rest, giving me 1:1 and optimal speed for DDR2 800....i assume.
 
Ok the motherboard im using, when i try to set 1:1 im only able to change FSB (QDR).

Then when you change the value, it automatically changes the MEM (DDR) to match.

So if i put 800 FSB it matches it with the MEM.
 
Ok, just managed to get it to

1500 FSB
450 DRAM

FSB : DRAM 5:6

This makes it unstable in othros.

Ok its fixed.

CPU @ 3.2ghz stable
Memory at 1600/400 stable

Ran small FFT and blend for a whole test and its running ok.
 
Could be an FSB hole on your board. Basically meaning that between certain FSB speeds, the motherboard will either not boot or crash in windows.

Ram the FSB up to 1700 and the memory to 850mhz and you should be stable (He says :rolleyes:)

The Geil you have will do 900mhz easily although you may have to up the voltage to 2.2v

Still in the safe zone though ;)

Bugger, just noticed you have a P5N-E SLI like I do.

Hmmmm, they seem to have the FSB holes between 1700 and 1780 on these.

You may have to stick at 1600 although that still gives you a nice oc to 3.2ghz :)

If it wont boot, keep the FSB at 1600 and raise the memory to 900mhz with 4-4-4-12 2T with 2.2v

I have a [email protected] (1825mhz) with Corsair XMS2 800mhz on 1000mhz 5-5-5-15 on 2.17v

Cheers for the replies.

Just orthos'd on small ffts passed, blend failed on thread 2, yet thread 1 was fine. :confused:

All voltages apart from memory are on auto, think thats a problem?

Going to put it back to 1600/800.

Getting some ballistix 8500 on monday, going to do some research on what i can get with them.
