My first poo-my-pants moment in a plane

Only have encountered one problem when flying, just about to land (at Bristol) we were about 10 meters from the ground when the pilot puts the engines into full power and pulls up. Apparently we had a small security issue on board

When they lean forward towards the emergency door, they put there hand on the door, and i can just picture some psycho going for the handle :S

Relax, the aeroplane is pressurised and the doors open inwards. The psycho would find it physically impossible and return to his seat embarrassed

Not a scary moment for me, but enough to have other passengers whining and crying, basically the in flight film was planet of the apes and was over the loud spkr.

Thing is, it was really bad weather so they turned off the screens but must have forgot the audio, now for normal people like say me, or you, you'd realise this.

But not for some, it was the modern creation of the film and if you skip near to the end it has a bit with a fighter jet warning the UFO (the man) that if they do not (do something..I forget..leave restricted airspace? they will get shot down)

Needless to say, some people thought it was real, and directed at our plane.
I guess it was that + the really bad weather that got some people too emotional.

Bear in mind that even without hydraulics, as long as the undercarriage can be released manually it'll drop due to mavity. It's when it doesn't lock you need to be worried.

My best flying moment - Phoenix, Airzona to Flagstaff (near the Grand Canyon), in a turboprop. That one was a fair old rollercoaster, complete with stewardess barely able to keep her feet, upchucking passengers, the works. I believe Flagstaff airport isn't particularly easy to land at either. Luckily I'd not had lunch, so I came out unscathed and I'm still here to tell you all about it. It was worth it for the scenery the following day. :)

Never been on a plane and my first ever flight will be a long one to canada :(

Being Canadian myself, I fly back home a few times each year to visit my family. Every flight I've been on has encountered a couple small pockets of turbulence but nothing more than that.

You have more to worry about from the aeroplane food imo.

I had a bad experience on the way back from turkey once. I remember looking out the window and seeing a bit lightning storm up ahead. We went just on the outside of it but got hit really hard. The plane was all over the place, dropping then rising all the time. When i looked out the window thinking the worst was over there was another storm up ahead. In the end we went through 3 storms like that and it gave be a bit off a fear off flying.

think worst i remember was when coming back from Tenirife, it was an early morning flight and being the last night of the holiday, we packed, then went out on the town. When the time came finally got on the plane, and fell asleep - bliss. Then i got woken up and given some 'breakfast'. Now i don't mind being woken up with a fryup - but this seemed to be a rubber version of said fryup. It was a horrible experience. Luckily it didn't last long, and i was soon asleep again.

My worst moment on a plane was flying from Belfast to London a few years ago. The weather was very bad at the time and so it wasn't the most pleasant of flights to begin with. About half way there the plane hit some bad turbulance and just dropped really fast. We weren't told what happened but everyone was just completely silent. I was so relieved to land that day.

I always get air sick so the slightest movement really does make me ill. Most flights that I am on I just curl up into a ball and don't move or speak to anyone. I really want to go to the states but honestly don't think i'd make the flight.

You could get some diazepam from your GP. It reduces anxiety.

It's not anxiety that causes the sickness it's the actual movement of the plane. The minute the aircraft lifts off the ground my stomach feels like it's been left on the ground until the minute I land again. It's quite hard to describe - sort of like when you go over a bump in the car and you get that feeling in your stomach except when i'm flying it doesn't go away. I've tried some different tablets from the GP but they have little effect on me.

I've only flown a handful of times, the first time i had previously been scared of flying and on take off to Ibiza i held my missus hand tightly :D, once we were up i was like ' there's nothing wrong with this, the next year i flew out to Ibiza again but flew back from Majorca (ferry inbetween), that was in 1999 and i haven't flown since. Now i'm back to square one, fear of flying but i can't explain why, i get frustrated with myself because i want to go all over the world but can't get myself on a plane :(

At this precise moment I'd just be happy to be on a plane (poo-my-pants moment or not). My flight to Stockholm is delayed for about 3 hours so it looks like I'm going to miss my connection to Tallinn

Scuzi - c'mon it's only a bit of fog. What are you boys playing at :p ;)

My first ever flight was in November, work related.

9 hours Manchester to Atlanta, then 1 hour to St Louis ( lots of 4+2 ).

Four days later, 1 hour on an even smaller plane ( 12 rows 2+2 ) to Memphis and another hour on another 12 2+2 to Greenville, SC.

Just over a week later, and it's another 12 2+2 back to Atlanta, 7 hours waiting on Thanksgiving in Atlanta airport, then 9 hours back to Manchester.

I also drove on the right ( legally ) for the first time - nervous for the first couple of hours driving, then easy !

All this was on my own, while my pregnant wife was at home celebrating her 30th birthday

I should also mention that I'm 6ft 5, the 767 cross-atlantic wasn't too bad, the others were "cosy" to say the least, all planes except the ATL->STL were full.

We were flying to Florida in '97, all strapped in and on the runway pilot throttles up and we start hurtling down the runway. At the point at which it seems like we should take off we all get flung forward as the pilot applies full reverse and sticks the brakes on hard.

He then comes over the tannoy and tells us there is a problem with the engines but not to worry. We taxied back to a gate where some engineers came out and fixed the problem. To calm everyone down (since they didn't let us off the plane) after an hour of waiting they decided to show us a film, the film they chose was Apollo 13 (which made a few people more nervous). About an hour after the film ended we took off, most of us spending the entire flight waiting to drop out of the sky.
