Hi,

First off i have been thinking of doing my CBT as im only 18 i no the biggest bike i can ride is a 125cc.

I have ridden bikes a lot (mainly offroad) so i like to go fast and wouldnt like riding a bike that is really slow, which most 125 bikes are!

Anyway the reason im on here is because im not big on smaller bikes and dont no too much about them, i am basically looking how much some good looking and reasonably fast (for a 125cc) second hand bikes and i thought some of you guys could help me out.

i sadly only have around £500 to spend max, if i wait for a few months i will have a bit more but that means waiting.

And what options do i have if i go for that word no one likes to say "finance".

Thanks guys and gals.

Sam.

get a 2nd hand Suzuki RG125 they're as fast as Aprilia's RS125 only a lot cheaper, and look a bit worse

You could try for a Honda NSR125, but they're pretty slow compared to the RS125's

I doubt you could get anything anywhere near decent for 500, my 1991 RG125 cost 250 and the guy I bought it off thought it was seized (turns out he kinked a fuel line when he put the tank back on :D)

You won't get too much for £500 I'm afraid. Do you have additional money for insurance? Helmet? Gloves? Jacket? Boots? Trousers? The CBT alone is going to be about £100.

I recently picked up an early NSR125 for my g/f for £230 in need of tyres, battery and brake pads. All in it came out at £400 taxed and MOT'd. Nice bike with no bodywork damage either, only problem is a seeping fork seal that I'll have to replace soonish.

I forgot you guys had to do a test before you get your provisional. What exactly is it?

A lot of people could do with it here, the scooter guys are much dangerous.

If you go for a smaller bike, I would definitely recommend you get a Derbi SM50. I had one and I have to say it was the most fun bike I had, it went like stink (when it was tuned) and handled brilliantly.

go to www.derbi-club.com for more details.

It's just a 1 day course that teaches you some of the basics. You only fail if you're actually dangerous, it's probably 99% pass rate.

The scooter guys don't follow anything they learnt in the CBT, so they're not much better. The 17 year olds on 125's are usually a bit better.

If you're not into 125's and have experience on bikes, £500 will easily buy you a intensive course and earn you a A2 restricted license (includes test fee, theory and CBT). You then have access to bigger bikes up to 33bhp.

Even at the age of 18?

Also wouldnt that mean most of my money to actuelly buy a bike would be out the window? :)

That's what I did( although I was older and already had a 125), got a cheap 600 restricted to 33bhp,it went a lot better than my the 125 I had to start with but was fairly cheap to insure, after 2 years you can get a bigger bike or just take the restriction off. you also have the added benifit of experience on a larger/heavier bike.

yep and yep.

you can do your a2 at 17, which limits you to 33bh, you don't need L plates and you can ride on the motorway.
A full test use to cost £300 including training, test etc. So wouldn't leave you much funds. Anyway to upgrade your funds, it's well worth doing.
