FF IX
FF Tactics War of the Lions
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Elder Scrolls Skyrim
Guild Wars

If I was going to recommend any modern day RPGs now, it would definitely be Elder Scrolls Skyrim, or if you have a PS3/PSP and don't mind the graphics then the Final Fantasy series, alternatively, if you don't mind MMOs then WoW/Guild Wars/Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is worth having a go, you can get free trial for WoW up to the first 20 levels so you wouldn't lose anything by trying, I personally don't play it any more because it takes far too much time.

jRPGs are a very specific genre, it's hardly likeable if you don't fancy movie-like games where half the content are cutscenes and your choices are severely limited.

fps whore here like yourself dont usally play rpg or mmo cause it makes me feel dirty

but..... skyrim is best game i played in last 3 or 4 years.

only wish i didnt rush the main quest and ventured more on side bits and bobs

lol i always keep the story quest for last - i always prioritize side quests and exploring first since it usually the most fun for me
