I've never had an issue with the old screwdriver to remove the oil filter trick, although now you mention it I guess it could cause problems if you're unlucky.

No, it was the top (assuming the large black smear is the hole). If you look at the picture you can see the "hex" flat shaped grip on the left, those are at the bottom to help you grip the filter. You can also just about see a smidgen of silver on the right, which is probably the neck of the filter, with the threads.
