my first spec me thread - adobe spec

so I built this just now and it's working fantastico ( can't belive how quiet it is compared to my machine )

But I ordered 8.1 as per spec because (my fault I know) I thought it was standalone but now I see it's not so I can't activate it. What are my choices here ? Do I have to buy and install 8 ?

Hmm, how do you mean? Surely you put the code in and windows is activated?

yeah - all activated now.

This was actually an alright simple project. My least favourite bit is probably trying to spread the thermal paste. I still cannot get over how quiet this thing is although suppose no GFX card as yet. But my i7 950 can be a bit overbearing in quiet movie scenes. Although between cards and AIO watercoolers there's about 7 fans on the go.

So how do I overclock then ? What software ?

Use the bios, try not to use software, always better through BIOS. You'll want to find a guide if you aren't sure, not too difficult, I'll see if I can find one

If you're overclocking, make sure everything is running exactly right first. It will be plenty fast at stock anyway and the last thing you want is a blue screen between saves or a corrupted file/bad install and troubleshooting is easier if you knew everything was fine before the overclock.

Do you have a backup solution?

thanks for the input. looks good. Prob hold off on graphics card as it will be purely study aid

By this I'm guessing you're a student then?

You can get Windows 8.1 Pro Student for £44.99 directly from Microsoft themselves - http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/pdp/productID.288533400?tid=sejfD83UJ_dc&cid=5366&pcrid=50063824965&pkw=windows%208%20student&pmt=e&WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=pointitsem_Microsoft+UK_google_Windows+8+-+UK&WT.term=windows%208%20student&WT.campaign=Windows+8+-+UK&WT.content=ejfD83UJ&WT.source=google&WT.medium=cpc

EDIT: I'm not sure if there's any features removed/altered but yeah... Just thought I'd chuck that your way, as I would've bought it myself had I known prior!

It's identical - you get a key via email to activate Windows 8.1 Pro, no limitations etc.

You have to be a member of a registered College/University though.

yeah not a student and Mrs is also not a member of reg coll/uni yet ! Thanks though.

Yeah I'll run it at stock for the monment make sure all is ok. The massive heatsink should give me some headroom though if we need toi ramp it up
