Hi all.

I recieved my first SSD in the post today, a Samsung 840 250Gb but there were no power/data cables. Could someone point me in the right direction as to what cables i need to install this.

I have an Antec 902 case
Corsair 750w PSU
P55 USB3 motherboard.

Thanks very much.

I have an oldish 250 gig HDD installed in the case that i use for storage, can i use the cables from that? I also use a WD 1TB with windows 7 on it that i'll replace with the SSD.

yeah, aslong as you have a data cable and a power connector cable for each drive then your fine

the power conector is the black block end in the link I posted above, and the data cable is smaller

once you've connected up the drives set the ssd as first boot device in the bios so that you boot from the ssd and not the storage hdd

what did you wanna do? put your os onto your new ssd?

if your os drive or data is larger than your ssd id do a clean install onto your ssd and then decide what data you wanna keep on your 1tb and backup/re install/delete what you don't need

set sata ports to ahci first then install windows, once done install intel rapid storage drivers

if cloning use macrium reflect,if you need to resize partitions later use easus partition master

General rule if it fits, it's the right connection. The only exception to this is your SSD drive is SATAIII and I don't think that motherboard supports 6Gb/s transfer speed. Don't worry though, it will still work as the drive is backward compatable and you wouldn't notice much or any difference from SATAII and SATAIII in perfomance anyway.

Are you re-installing windows or cloning the windows partiton back on?

After some research i think i might do a fresh install of Windows on the SSD. Swap the 250 gig storage for the 1TB. Are the ahci settings found in bios?

I have a related question to the starter of this thread as I'm thinking of the doing the same thing, that may be of help to many folks:

@ Wazza300 - I understand the BIOS switch to ACHI but where does one get the Intel rapid storage drivers from? Wouldn't they come with the M/B? If not, where does one get the latest for one's specific M/B or SSD?

Regards,

Mark

The motherboard manufacturer's site should have them listed in the downloads/driver section for you board.
Although they're not strictly necessary, win vista/7 installed ahci drivers do the job well, but you may see some slight bumps in speeds witht he Intel rst

youll see them on your motherboards web page for your model of mb,they will be intel rst or rapid storage drivers

and you install them from within windows like any other program

EDIT: oops didn't see eddyr's reply

ok...

Installed SSD and boot priority to it.I change from ide to ahci in bios. Re boot and comp see's SSD.

Do i just insert windows disc then?
