Shortly I will be installing W8 to replace my current XP and am looking for a SSD as my C drive. It will only contain the OS and programs, everything else living on my D drive as at present.

A present I am using 13gig of my C drive. Is W8 a lot bigger than XP?

My W7 laptop, running far fewer programs has 23gig on the C partition.

Would a ~30gig be big enough, or is it better to go for a ~60gig?

Also what should/shouldn't I be looking for?

Get 60GB for sure, 30 is no good these days. You should look at revies to see what models are goor or bad, it changes all the time and a brand might use cheaper chips or whatever even in newer models to reduce costs

get the biggest/best gb per £ you can get, some 128gb drives aren't far off 60gb ssd prices

remember you want the 7mm drives so that they will fit
