My friend has changed his name to....

Yeah but that counts for about as much as me saying "I officially declare my name to be William the Conqueror."

Which is all you have to do really. It gets tricker when dealing with banks and the like but there is nothing legally stopping you from changing your name to whatever you want.

you can change the name on your driving licence to anything you want, so surely you could then open a utility account and with those two open a bank account

Not sure this is true. You need to send ID if you are changing the name on your driving license (I've got the form and everything!).

EDIT: Accompanying documentation with the form states:

e) Change of name
If your name is different from that shown on your digital UK passport, current photocard license or the document you are enclosing, you must supply proof of your name change, an original marriage/civil partnership certificate(s), all decree nisi or absolutes, and any deed-poll declarations. The evidence you provide must show a clear link between the name on your identity document or digital UK passport and your current name.

I work on a telephone helpdesk for a telecoms company. We get to see some REALLY funny names.

I had one guy on a while back whose name, and he claimed this to have been changed by deed poll, was, and i quote, "The Red Wizard". I called him "Mister Wizzard" (pronounced like eddie izzard) the whole call.

Had another guy who set up an account with us called Dame Roderick The Mighty- After muting my mic to laugh a lot, i set it up. :D

In fact my account with our company (they don't know) is called Mr Lucky Azell, and when Sky were taking interest as to how many people wanted "up to 16mb broadband" in our area, i used a load of fake names to get them to bring it here. We still get junkmail in names like; Yamomma Sofat, Nigel Fontescue-Barrington-Smythe, Captain James Custard III, General Richard Elizabeth Chardley, i've even had one for Baron Legge-Payne..

lol :D

EDIT: i also have a email account that i use to sign up to stuff to keep my main account free of spam. I usually use the name of it to sign up for sites i may not go back to much - The name is Aaron Gutang.. hehe

Mentioned it in a previous post but my cousin's friend changed his name to Rhyme Master Joey Joe Joe Toasterface, and insists on being referred to as "Mr. Toasterface" when he visits the bank etc :D

There are some really funny names where I work but I'm not sure if it's allowed to mention them on a public forum (Data Protection etc?)

The list of entries says Ryan Carol, but the actual "deed" says Ryan Carroll...

Does the OP not know his friend's name? Or are the "deeds" wrong? :)

The deeds are a template as you can't put numbers in your name via deed poll. Surely they would need to be submitted, too, and that hasn't happen.

Essentially it's a hoax.

hmmm, i was sure there was a bit that allowed you to have a commonly used name on there rather than your legal name, presumably for people who dont have distinguished names, e.g. families where all the brothers are called mohammed

it's possible it was on a different form and i've got confused
