I've just put a new gallery up on my website. http://www.devolv.co.uk/gallery/

it's a mix of everything on there, 21 images in total which is probably too much but i can cut it down. there's some old stuff that some of your may remember and some new stuff. i'd just like some general feedback on what people like and don't like.

thanks :)

There isn't much not to like there really. Simple and smart. You don't have the images from the blog in the gallery - I take it that's intentional - so I'm assuming that the gallery is meant to be more of a portfolio thing?

One comment I would make would be just to give the images numbers (if you don't want to do names) so that they aren't the default CRW_****.jpg. That looks a bit naff. Is there a way of including EXIFs with the image name at the bottom?

that's exactly right, the blog is just an ongoing thing that i update with new images as they come whereas the gallery is meant to be a show of my best and/or favourite images.

I do agree with you here and it's something i'm going to have to look at. I use the simpleviewer script for photoshop and it doesn't give you file naming options so i will have a look at a work around.

thank you for the input

just rename the files manually before you import them in to simpleviewer/photoshop

nice gallery btw

yeah the only reason I haven't done that is that i'll still get the file extensions so it will just be 1.jpg 2.jpg etc. and will look equally lame i think

yeah you can edit the code but 1) i'm useless at html 2) a portion of it is flash and i'm even more useless at flash :p

i'm just going to change it to 01.jpg etc for the time being as it does look a bit better.

cant you just tell windows to hide file extension types?

will try this in a moment

edit:

no you cant, it still shows the .jpg on the images..

unfortunately i tried that already and I didn't work, photoshop takes the full filename regardless.

ok, here is how you do it

go in to the folder that is storing the simple viewer output

open "gallery.xml" with notepad

edit the file names in there (leave the file name, just edit the caption part)

save it

hey presto :D

oh you're a genius, thank you

*EDIT - all done now, it looks much better :)

my pleasure

having looked at your work again i have to say there are some brilliant shots, especially the ariel snowboard stuff...

Only thing I would say is that the page title is still 'simpleviewer'. I would be inclined to change it. Apart from that it's very nice mate. Reminded me of some of your past photos that I really like. :)

thank you. I really love shooting in the snow but it's tough because I love to ski much so i didn't shoot this winter as much as I would have liked. (oops should change my location now really).

I really love shot 16 (even though i cropped off his head, oops) simply because you don't really pay much attention to the shadow of the skiier on the floor, but if you look it's me holding my camera, lol. and that jump isn't small... thoughts of 'WTF am I doing up here with my camera' were common.

I hadn't spotted that thanks, changed it now. glad you like them

Much better :).

As changing the captions is that simple, I'd put a brief EXIF in too. For me that would be a good addition, especially as you don't actually say what you shoot with on your main site. That's a personal thing and you might not like the idea, but I like to know what I'm looking at.

i've noticed some of the file sizes are a bit ridiculous so i'm going to change those to improve load times.

as far as exif goes, i leave it on all my blog shots so people can see if they are interested. as the gallery is more of a show piece i'd rather just leave it out.

every shot in the gallery was taken on my 10D with sigma 10-20 or 70-200f4L, aside from the B&W portrait that was 50 f/1.8. sometimes i steal 20/30Ds from my friends so the odd shot on my blog is from them. as much as i love my 10D i could reeeeealy do with an upgrade.
