Right, some may have read that I've been having some major issues with my board and overclocking it with 4X1GB sticks of GeiL PC2-6400 RAM. Basically, on any overlcock the PC would just be about to POST and then restart. This would carry on, and the most annoying part is that once I manage to boot the thing then it would be stable when Prime 95 was running for 8 hours +.

Having read through the overclocking guide for this board I have come to the assumption that it's the 4X1GB sticks that's causing the issue. To assertain whether this is true, and indeed to assist in helping any other people who have this issue, I thought I'd create this log to null the problem and indeed find highest overclock on my lapped G0 Q6600 under water. You may want to keep checking as this will take me some time to fine tune and as such there will be updates.

Step 1 - Lets try just 2GB now

So I got home about 20 mins ago and have started playing. So I removed 2GB leaving me with just 2X1GB sticks in, set my FSB to 400, RAM to 800 @ 5-5-5-15, VCore to 1.45V, VDimm to +0.3V and the rest to one increment to one step above default. All C1E etc disabled. The PC wouldn't POST so I cleared CMOS and tried again, this time upping VCore to 1.5V. Boots fine, no issues with the reset annoyance and here I am typing this post. This gives me a healthy 3.6GHz overclock. Here are some CPU-Z shots.

This gives me a good basis to start on. VCore shown is at idle. Remember, it's set at 1.5V in BIOS so a little too high though it's not time for fine tuning yet. When I fire up Prime 95, VCore drops to 1.456V. I don't see the point in going into temps till I find an O/C that won't auto reset on power up and will be stable in Prime for 8 hours.

Next step is to have Prime running for a bit, try a restart and see if this carries on booting no probs. After that I plan on upping the FSB and VCore till I find max overclock then fine tuning. Watch this space.

UPDATE:

I thought I’d give 3.8 a go at 423 FSB, but I had to increase VCore to 1.525 to stop the resetting thing. Went to Prime 95 and the PC immediately crashed and rebooted. Now I’m trying VCore at 1.55 to see what happens.
VCore BIOS 1.55V
VCore CPU-Z idle 1.536V
VCore CPU-Z load 1.520V then crashed after 10 secs of Prime

So now the VCore goes up again to 1.575V
CPU-Z idle 1.522V
CPU-Z Prime 1.536V
Prime fails on two cores after 20 secs. Off to tinker again.

Right, after tinkering, I put up VCore and yet again Prime fails near instantly so now I will put VCore to 1.6V, with 1.625 as max if that fails then start bringing down the FSB slowly.

I'll reserve the next two post spaces just in case.

Update. Ah great, no 1.625 in BIOS. So now I'm on 1.65 VCore and priming.

Reckon the temps to high here? I've showed one thing so far and that is that this board hates any mroe then two sticks!

Have you increased the voltage to the Northbridge/Memory Controller (MCH)?

you usually find that having 4x1GB sticks of RAM increases the load on the memory controller to such a level that the motehrboard becomes increasingly unstable and if you have the board already overclocked then you'll either have to apply voltages or reduce the FSB.
 
MCH +0.1V is too low. I was adding nearly half a volt to get my old IP35 Pro stable over 400MHz FSB with 4x1gb OCZ

I don't know if I trust Coretemp at the moment, some ppl have been reporting strangely high readings...however 80C is a little worrying, but it depends on your cooling...1.65V is way too high unless you have a really good watercooling set up...

the fact is, you will be able to get a much higher overclock if you only use 2 sticks of RAM, so take your pick, 4GHz or 4GB...
 
I've got it booted at 400 FSB with MCH set to +0.25V with all four stick installed.

Had a few more replies from GB:

Them:

By Gigabyte design, for stability concern of using DDR2-800 (or above) memory, system will automatically adjust the DDR voltage by 0.2v.

Hence, when DDR2-800 module used, the default DDR voltage will be 2.0v (bit more or bit less).

Try adjusting the voltage to 2.1v as module’s recommendation; manually add 0.1v in the BIOS.

Are you suggesting that to much VDimm could cause instability?

It's possible.

Wonder why I've not heard of this before?
 
Well I'm now running at 3.6Ghz with 4GB installed. 400 FSB, RAM at 800, 5-5-5-18, MCH is now +0.25V.

Its not prime stable though, I'm just working on that.
