But I'm not playing a game or anything, just browsing the web/skype/such like.

I'm not sure what is considered hot for a gpu, but my guess is thats way too hot to say I'm not putting it under a lot of stress?

I was hoping to overclock it a bit before I buy a new card in a couple months time

I have the XFX 9800gt that I got from OC in July 2010 which had to get RMA'd in sept of 2010 as the ram failed. I have now had to RMA the replacement one as that has failed because of the same fault.

I can confirm at least for me that the card would run hot when playing certain games. It would usually sit idle at 60 degrees. If I was playing Minecraft the temps would go upto and over 90 degrees.

oops i should have said that the default fan speed was 30% and would go higher by itself if required.

I have been told by someone that nvidia cards can run hotter than ati ones although not sure if this is true or not. But at least for me the 9800gt card does get hot.

Yeah I will thrice that. They're hot buggers ! even with an Arctic twin turbo on mine it idled at around 52c !

The stock coolers on them are laughable really. That tiny little piddly fan doesn't do much.

funny cause a friend has the 8800gt and he says it is awesome. I am afraid the same cant be said of the 9800gt. :(

80 degrees @ 75% fan speed while 'browsing' just can't be normal surely?

Heavy dust build up or low/no air intake into your case, no air exhaust, or no case fans at all?

Just cleaned my PC & gpu fan, I have the side of my case removed (always have), 2 case fans and it's still 80c. Reaches up to 94c when playing Football Manager 12.

I have an 8800gt with akasa vortex neo on it and it idles at 49-50, 60-70 whilst gaming needs cleaning though. When it had the stock cooler on it temps would be 70+ with fan profiles set in rivatuner. Case has 3 100mm fans.

Is there a relatively cheap fan I could buy for it? Or would I be best off just waiting until I can afford a new card (few weeks, around £110)

I don't remember what my 8800GTS temps were but I had a 4850 which would do 80+c for fun, nearly 100 in games.

Yeah, I had a 4870 which was always above 80c, even in a cold room and idle. Case ventilation was fine, as was the temperature of everything else. Would go down quite a bit if I turned up the fan, but then I was sitting next to a hair dryer. The card died eventually (just outside of warranty), probably more to do with dodgy hardware than the heat tbh as that series ran hot.

Anyway, that temperature does seem high, but it's hard to tell just by knowing it's a 9800 GT. It could be standard for that card make/cooler design. You could try testing it with a stress tool and looking for artifacts whilst keeping a close eye on the temperatures.
The card may well be either reporting the temperature incorrectly or just scraping by with the bare minimum of cooling.

Personally, I'd sell it and get what I could while it's still working and just get a new one (or, at the moment, an old one) and be done with it, but if you are happy with it, just keep it, hope for the best and upgrade when you are comfortable, because 80c is okay, not that I'd try overclocking it. Also, replacing the cooler isn't worth the effort/risk with that age of card, IMO.

PS: Just noticed that you said you usually run with the side of the case off. That can reduce temperatures if you have really poor ventilation, but it's usually best to have a directed airflow. If your case ventilation is off then it's going to effect any replacement card as well. You can probably pick up a bunch of basic fans cheap second hand as people who upgrade or work on systems often end up with loads.

He can't sell a faulty product as "working" and have any shred of decency left. Either replace the card with something newer and faster or if you are extremely budget limited, buy an arctic twin turbo cooler or a gelid icyvision 2 and replace the obviously faulty heatsink and fan assembly on the card.

Such a high temperature means that either the fan has died or the heatsink has dislodged and isn't making proper contact with the gpu surface anymore. Replace this with either listed above or the entire card.

Where did I say sell it as working perfectly?

Plenty of people sell stuff as possibly faulty or condition unknown and get at least some cash for it. Plus, the op says it IS working, and is just curious about the temperature. If you've been stung buying stuff, that's your problem.

Anyway, he can easily see if the fan has died and he said he'd already cleaned it, if the heatsink had disloged then it would rise quickly if he stress tested it. Buying a heatsink for that age of card is just a waste of money and effort IMO.

EDIT: Also, the heatsink/fan is not "obviously faulty". There are plenty of cards that run at those temperatures and any number of factors can make a card that doesn't seem to be doing much hit 80c. The real suspect thing is the 75% fan usage which makes me suspect that it's just a poor cooler.

the only important thing is... is it stable? if it's fine then i'd leave it alone.

Yeah it is. Not had any problems. Just a bit worrying being that high I guess.

Think I'll just buy a new card instead of faffing with this one. Thanks for the replies guys.

Your case fans aren't doing much in that rig if the entire side panel is not fitted...
