My graphics card being the result of low fps?

Hey Overclockers,

I'll get straight to the point and hoping someone can help me - I've recently bought a gaming computer, I can run most FPS games at 60+ FPS with ease, but when it comes to WoW I'm getting pretty bad rates, I know the human eye can only sense 28 or so FPS but let's be honest, we all want amazing FPS.

While in high populated area, I'm around 28 Windowed (20 full screen) FPS or lower, when in low populated areas I'm on 40-50 FPS.

My current graphics settings are at Good with Sunshafts disabled, I'm running in Windowed mode.

My computer specs are:

Windows 7 (64 bit)
i7 Overclocked to 4.03 GHz
6GB Corsair XMS3
ATI Radeon 5570

My screen resolution is 1920x1080 (24 Inch)

Any advice is much appreciated - here's a link to my system:

I'm just wondering, since everything else seems to be scoring a high rate, it could be my graphics that are making me loose out?

Unfortunately the ati 5570 you got with that PC isn't a particularly powerful card, and those FPS's sound about right.

I know you don't want to be told this now, but you really should have chosen one of the more powerful optional GPU's. I guess you could always try overclocking to see if you can get more performance out of it.

First off, thanks for the reply!

Second, I got the feeling it wasn't the most powerful one there, I was on a bit of a budget haha. Graphics card are pretty confusing, would I be pushing it if I was to ask you to give me some information on what type of card I should be aiming for, I'm not a particularly hardcore gamer, just things like WoW, Call of Duty.

The ironic thing is, with the huge amount of people complaining about Call of Duty killing their computers, it runs absolutely fine on mine - yet World of Warcraft doesn't..

Call of Duty is not a demanding game - it is a console port. You might be getting confused by the reports of slowdown and lag which many users experienced with Black Ops on release, which was a glitch which has since been patched.

As jimbob27 said, the FPS results you are reporting seem about right for your graphics card. For the processor and RAM you have, it is actually a complete waste to pair them with a Radeon 5570, which is a low-end card - especially as you are playing at 1080p resolution.

For the games you play, and the resolution you play at, I would highly recommend a Radeon 6870, which can be purchased for approx. £200. This will handle your games well for a good few years and is very efficient when it comes to size, power consumption and temperatures.

If this is out of your price range perhaps look to the Radeon 6850 - there is currently a great "this week only" deal on OCUK where you can get a HIS 6850 for £139. I would not advise going any cheaper than this, as any weaker card will struggle to perform at 1080p.

You will notice I have not recommended any Nvidia cards - this is mainly because Radeon cards generally run cooler, quieter and offer better bang for buck. However, there are currently some great deals on the GTX 460 and GTX 470 which are in a similar range to the 6850/6870 - You can currently pick up a GTX 460 1GB card for £140 on OCUK, and OCUK offering a MSI GTX 470 for £180 is an awesome deal.

Graphics cards can be confusing, but do some research, read some reviews, and you'll figure out which is best for you.

Thanks, would there be much difference between the 6870 and the 6850? I don't mind paying £139 but £200 seems to be pushing it haha.

Personally I'd say the nvidia GTX460 1GB is the best 'bang for buck' card out there at the moment. it's fast, runs cool if you get a model with an aftermarket cooler and isn't too expensive and will play WoW @1080p no problem.

I would sure think someone is confused if they spent 1k on a gaming system and only chose one of the worst cards possible to put in there.

Buy a GTX 460 or something and put it in your system, done.

I think a 6850 would be better in your situation and will be enough to run WoW with full settings on. :)

Actually, the 5570 is pretty much default on the system, I didn't expect it to be that bad considering the price tag on the system.

i think window mode doesnt max the gpu performance. try in full screen mode. not100% sure on this worth a try

i built an i7 with xfire 5830
running at max detail in 1920x1200 res
getting 50ish fps in dalaran
80ish fps in borean thunder
i dont think wow support xfire so prob not max the gpu performance

just abit of performance figure for you to compare on.

Unfortunately, if you thought you were buying a gaming system - you were mis-sold. Send it back for a full refund.

The 5570 is the third from bottom discrete graphics card in AMD's previous generation. It is sold as only being suitable for HTPC use and light gaming - these cards retail for £54 for the general public - likely less for a big PC maker.

To put this in perspective, when specifying a £1000 on OCUK the general rule of thumb is to spend at least £200 on the graphics card if the machine will be used for playing modern games. This is because in modern PC games it is the graphics card that largely determining gaming performance.

That's not the buyers fault in this case, its the people that spec'd the system originally who are to blame here.

Going by this description ( p.s I hate marketing people... ) :

" high performance, handpicked components designed to meet your desire for the perfect gaming system "

Eh, no, not exactly perfect when you get home & realise the gfx card isn't up to scratch & need to fork out even more £££'s to get half decent performance ( as Ragex has done )

Having a 5570 as the gfx card in a ' Pro Gamer ' system with an i7@4ghz and 6gb of ram is a shocking choice imho. A 5770 or a GTX 460 should be, at the very least, the baseline card in that system.

OcUK seem to have a fairly good rep, but selling a system advertised as being ' Pro Gamer ' with a card that's slower than a 9600GT as the default option won't do that reputation any good whatsoever...

And btw, if anyone from OcUK reads this, your "Ultima Raptor" system description doesn't mention what gfx card it comes with as default.

Surely some poor soul isn't expected to pay £1k on a new system, just to get it delivered & then discover it comes with no gfx card ?

I'd love to see how it "powers through applications and games with equal ease" without one :p

( I'm assuming it comes with a 6870, as there's a crossfire option menu, but no mention of this being the case )

Btw, it would be cool if there was audio descriptions on the system webpages.

That way you could have Delboy from Only Fools doing them, which would probably be something along the lines of this :p :

" See this 'un Rodders, the Ultimahhh Vipahhh, that's the been knees that pee cee is "

" Ready made for all those top grade proffeshonal gamers out there "

" Not only does its proffessoor run at a blinding 4000mhz instead of 3000 and 6, oh no Rodders, there's also a mahssive 6000 megabits of ram in it an' all ! "

" And see that there AeeTeeAii Radenon 5570 ? That a propah grafiks card that is. None of that NinVidiahh nonsense here Rodney. This is a top grade, high performance pee cee after all "

" Those pro gamers expect the very best for their hard earned wonga, and that what we're givin' em Rodney. Lovleey jubbley... "
