My graphics card seems to have lost performance.

Hi guys.

I'm hoping I can get some advice for my current computer problem.

Before I start, I'll write down my computer specs:

Pentium Dual Core E6300 @ 2.8ghz (stock)
G.Skill 4Gb PQ DDRII PC8000 (2x2Gb Kit)
Gigabyte 1gb HD4850 (fanless)
MSI P45 Platinum (MS-7512)
Hiper 580w Type-R Power supply

My RAM has some settings changed...about a year ago someone helped me get my RAM running at their advertised speed. Thought I'd mention that incase it's relevant.

Ok so here's my problem ...

My graphics card seems to have gone down in performance since I first got it. I haven't done any gaming for a while but last week I tried to play APB Reloaded and saw that my FPS wouldn't go above 25, it was staying between 10 and 15 fps constantly !

I used to play APB perfectly with good FPS, no issues whatsoever.

I thought maybe it was a problem with the game because it is only a Beta version so I ignored it. This week though I decided to try the Resident Evil 5 benchmark (fixed) test to see what would happen in that. I only scored about 20 fps in that too...I'm sure when I first got this card I scored higher avg fps than that.

Even when I changed from the highest res/settings to the lowest res/settings the avg fps outcome would only change by about 5-10fps ! that seems wrong to me ?

Finally today I fired up an old game of mine - counter strike source. I remember benchmarking on that game when I first got this card and I scored in the hundreds for avg fps.

I ran the video stress test today and scored....60fps average. I even turned every single setting to the lowest possible till the graphics looked awful and it made barely any difference at all - maybe between 1 and 5 fps difference.

I ran windows update and saw an optional update for my g card drivers, so i installed them - no luck, same result.

Next I went to the AMD website and got the latest drivers possible for my 4850 .... no luck, same result again.

I then tried some older drivers...again, no luck.

Can anybody give me some advice on what to do/try ?

1 last thing to mention is sometimes when I turn on my PC after about 5 seconds it will re-boot...then it will start up fine. I thought that was pretty random...it's never done it before but seems to do it quite often now.

Thanks.

Are your motherboard drivers properly installed? might be worth re-installing them/getting latest since that can severely hinder your fps majority of the time.

Have you tried a fresh windows install? (installing all drivers from scratch too during this would rule out any driver issues or programmes causing it which means it could be a hardware issue aka PSU)

Thank you for replying !

I haven't tried updating motherboard drivers, I'll do that now. :)

I haven't tried a fresh install, no. That's like my final resort...I hate having to format. :(

Oh wow...nothings changed with MSI then.

I remember when I built this PC over a year ago the MSI website was rubbish and barely worked at all. It took me days to finally get access to the CPU support list on their website.

I've just gone on it to update my drivers & can't even load the page for my motherboard. Great.

working for anyone else ? (when you click download or any of the other links)

your card could be on it's way out....

Thanks for the good news. :p lol.

I am fearing the worst, shame really because I got barely any use out of it.

I'm planning on replacing it but I need to get to the route of the problem because I'm planning on selling it & I don't want to sell a faulty card to someone.

The fact that your score came out at 60 fps average exactly in CS would lead me to think vertical sync is on.It would also be consistant with you getting 10 and 15 fps scores if your frame rate is dropping below 30 fps on the other games you mentioned.

66.2 average, just ran the test again on high settings.

In CCC i have wait for vertical refresh set to always off - is the setting you were talking about ?

Yes thats the setting, also with 66.2 fps average it`s probably switched off anyway ;).Have you possibly put an anti aliasing setting on by mistake?that would be consistant with a big drop in fps.

When I run the CSS stress test it makes barely any difference whether I put AA+AF up at its highest or at its lowest.

What temp does the 4850 get to under load?

I don't have anything to really put it under heavy load atm but I can tell you during the CSS stress test it runs at 65-67c

It does make a strange noise though ... it's been doing it since I bought it (second hand). It sounds like errrr...a "crackling" noise when it's playing games. That's the best way I can describe it.

I assume it's the g.card making that noise anyway ... is it normal ?

edit: idle is 60c

Just to update the situation:

I purchased a bundle from OCUK (the i5 2500k 4.4 oc) and tried the card in the new system and it's working perfectly again.

One thing I noticed when I took apart my old PC was it was absolutely covered in dust on the fans and even my graphics card looked dull with the heatsink covered in a layer of dust also.

I gave everything a good clean and like I say it's working fine now. I will be much more careful with keeping my computer clean in future...it even had dead insects inside it....nice !

Very happy with my new bundle too, shame I can't use the OC setting yet.

I can't use the OC setting because of my power supply (it fails to boot and comes up with an error about a recent overclock in the bios)....it only has a 4 pin ATX which I suspect must be the problem (guy on the phone at OCUK agreed saying my CPU isn't getting enough power). I've purchased a 4 pin to 8 pin adapter so hopefully that will let me run the OC stable, if not I'll buy a new PSU.

I'm guessing/hoping my 580w Hiper type-r PSU is up to the job... I don't fancy splashing out 70+ pounds on a new one. :(

Fingers crossed.

Edit: the graphics card now runs at 40c idle compared to 60c idle (same case...same fans, just dust free!)

This may not resolve the problem, you'd still be drawing the same amount of power down the same number of wires, putting the same strain on the wires and PSU. You can get a 4 pin EPS & 4 pin molex to 8 pin EPS connector which will give you a bit more juice but OcUK don't stock them (athough you can get them from other e-tailers)

That's the cable I purchased....do'h - waste of money then I guess. :( I'll give it a try anyway and cross my fingers, perhaps I'll get lucky and it will run.

Perhaps I will just bite the bullet and purchase a good quality PSU. It's just a shock how expensive the good ones are (I'd want a modular one too...so even more money!).

I seem to be good at wasting money recently...my bundle from ocuk arrived a couple of days ago and now I notice it's in the weekly special £20 cheaper than I paid. Annoying !

I bet all your problems are coming from you PSU, them Hiper Type R 580w are well known around these forums, they have a high failiure rate and like to explode.

No way would I run anything on it never mind a brand new i5 system.

You sir are a brave man!

When I read that I laughed, then I got a sinking feeling.

You sir have successfully worried me, haha. I don't know about brave ... clueless would be a better description I think ! :D

I've been running my Hiper PSU for a stupid amount of years, I can't even remember how long. 5 years + maybe ? Oh dear.

If the old beauty were to 'explode' as you put it ... what would happen ? Would my components get taken out along with the PSU itself ?

I wouldn't care if old the PSU died, but if it drags my new CPU/MB/RAM with it I will be absolutely gutted.

I will buy a new power supply when I return home from my holiday - i'll probably pick up one of those Corsair HX 850's.

I wont even touch the OC profile now after what you've said, not going to bother even trying that 4 pin to 8 pin cable. It was only £1.90 anyway, I'll just shove it in the spare cables pile !

Oh...fantastic.

Just did a quick search on the forum for my PSU and up comes a post with people talking about how their Hiper 580's have blown up and taken out their CPU's & graphics cards with them.

Wonderful news !

Scared to play any bloody games now, haha. :(

Yeah those are the 3 threads I read earlier !

I'm amazed that I've been using mine this long with no trouble, I use it a lot too ! Loads of use out of it !

I wonder how much time is left on my ticking bomb. It's going on auction ASAP.

Not sure whether to list it as a bomb or a power supply ... :)
