I apologise in advance for the long post.
I recently built a brand new desktop with all new components, apart from an ATA133 hard drive from my old tower. In the first instance of me turning on my new pc it wouldn't work because the motherboard was shorting; but then as soon as i fixed it i encountered the problem that it would start for about half a second(fans would spin up for one rotation) then it would turn off completely and i would need to turn the psu off and on again after unplugging the HDD to get the thing to turn on. This was the case with every other computer i then plugged the HDD into to test it.
It stops the psu from powering up even if ONLY the hard drive is plugged into the psu and there is no connecting from the hard drive to the motherboard.
My question is; could anyone tell me what it is that I've done to it which is stopping any pc with it in from starting up?Furthermore, if its completely nakered is there any chance of recovering the data without paying someone else to do it because my backup is so out of date.
my specs
intel C2D e6600
asus p5n32-e sli plus MoBo
OCUK geforce 7900 gs
corsair 2gb ddr2 xms2-6400cs
samsung spinpoint 250gb SATA2(The one i now have my in my tower running)
maxtor diamondmax 17 160gb ATA133(The broken drive)
I've had people tell me that perhaps the controller board is nakered and I should replace it, but i can't seem to work out how i would go about getting one seeing as the drive itself isn't even made anymore.
It is under warranty so i will get a new one but i really really would like the data on it; just not enough to spend £500+ on data recovery.
any help or advice would be really appreciated
