Was working fine last night. Today I wake up, switch on my pc and it errors at boot time with this
: Ultra dma mode 5, Smart capable but command failed and after HDD detection failed.
The drive is properly recognized in the bios but it is no longer accessible by normal data recovery progz. Am thinking of sending it to a professional recovery installation place if it doesn't cost too much. Anyone knows the cost of it?

For a replacement am after a 320GB drive. Should i go for a seagate .11 or WD RE2? Noise factor is important to me and then speed

For a little more you could get a 640GB WD which is £57 this week only :)

Have you checked all the cables connecting to the HDD and motherboard? It does sound like its on its last legs though :/

Can you give me some reviews of the recent drives? wanna check up on the 640GB model as well.

I called a company that recovers data via professional means even from damaged drives. The cost is from 350 to 950 pounds. Of course i didn't send my drive in

You could do it yourself if you had the right equipment and an extreme understanding of how your OS allocates resources.
Seems easy enough ^^

The right equipment is the part you will have major problems with. They have to use those special rooms that have ZERO dust or dirt, since apparently one micron of dust in the wrong place can kill the data. Thats why you pay them silly money to do it for you. That said, if the part of the drive that has failed isnt the platters or the internals, (ie its an electronics failure) you can apparently get away with changing the PCB on the bottom of the drive with one from a working drive of the exact same model. Might be worth a shot since its relatively cheap. I think you should look up exactly what SMART is reporting to be wrong with the drive and go from there.
