pc is so loud !

I can hear a whirring like up and down? I have tried stopping all the fans One at a time but cant quite put my finger on where the sound is comming from , doin my head in !!!!

psu?

Probably the hard drive vibrating :) Take out the power cable (while off!) and start the PC to see if it's any better :) Obviously it won't fully boot like this but should tell you if it is indeed the drive.

hard drive whirring up and down? i hope not lol. could be the cpu fan if its plugged into the motherboard - is your heatsink clean/mounted correctly ect. could be the psu fan - is the air coming out the back abnormally hot?

It's not likely to be the drive itself which is spinning up and down but simply the vibration transmitted to the case. My old WD SE's used to drive me up the wall doing this :)

freezer64 its not that

i suspect its the psu

Unplug every fan. Then start it. Then turn off and unplug the hdd and start it. If still causing the problem then take PSU out of case (plug back in) and try that. Don't forget that motherboards and gfx cards also have fans which can cause resonance.

hmmm. put your pc under load and stick your ear next to the psu.

aha
its my 120gb western Digital drive....
how do I quieten a HD !!

You need to isolate it from the case. If it's the case resonating it wouldn't hurt to damp the panels with some acoustic material too - in fact that may be enough.

The drive itself can be enclosed in something like a Silentmaxx which both reduces drive noise & isolates it from the case by fixing through rubber mounts into a 5.25" drive bay - or you could just suspend the drive using bungee chord to stop the vibration transmitting to the chassis.

www.silentpcreview.com can tell you all you need to know about this kind of thing and more if you're interested.

best thing to do is buy a samsung hd and sell this one .... by far the easiest way to sort your problem.

Personally, I use a 500Gb Samsung T-Series Spinpoint in a Silentmaxx enclosure.
