My HTPC (documented self-build)

I thought I would tidy up the HDD sata cable as it looked messy before:

I kinda coiled it up around itself and cable tied it so it stayed that way, looks much neater I think!

Adventures in Windows 7 land

Ohhh Ahhhh Weee Windows 7 (64bit RC 7100), I like!

Gives the best picture on my TV of all media players ive tried so far.
If you missed it, I have already tried Mythbuntu, LinuxMCE and WinXP

Encountered a few minor problems with installation:

Seems it doesn’t like me unplugging the HDMI cable while 7 is running, it wont re-sinc with the TV even if I plug in back in and reinitialise the input select on the TV. Had to reboot PC to get a picture again. Not really important, but thought I would mention it.

7 didn’t have the drivers for my tuner card, it tried but couldn’t find them with automatic download. I used the Vista 64 drivers from the Hauppauge website and this seemed to work.

Got an error whilst setting up the 7 media centre. Playready failed to install. Initially thought this was a serious fail, but found a thread that explained it probably doesn’t matter if you live outside the USA.

However it then went on with the setup and failed to find any TV channels at all…

Again, thought this was a serious fail. Just out of curiosity tried switching the coax TV aerial cable to the bottom coax input (Nova-TD-500 has 2 coax inputs and 2 tuners btw). Tried the TV setup a second time and this time Playready worked and all TV freeview channels were also picked up.

NB: Must be something weird in the drivers, as I believe it shouldn’t matter which coax you use and besides it worked fine in Mythbuntu using the top socket.

Everything Ive tried so far works now. Live TV not working great yet, but at least it works!

When you watch live TV and bring up the TV Guide which overlays most of the TV picture, the system slows down and controls get a bit laggy. I think this can probably be fixed by tweaking graphics settings. I only have a Radeon 3200 and im sure its struggling to do overlay at 1080p that’s causing this. Ill go looking for the settings later.

Live TV Pause, Forward, Rewind, Record, TV Guide etc all work OK.

Movie DVDs worked straight off without having to install anything. No slowdown with the interface up in DVDs either.

Don’t actually have any Blu-Rays to test as yet ;)

PS: Inside of my fusion case is quite warm (CPU 37c, MB 39c). I imagine this is because I have windows 7 running with 1080p desktop. More cooling is needed perhaps. PSU and HDD compartments staying relatively cool. PSU is cold to the touch. I suspect all the heat is coming from the GPU, might check to confirm this later.

Great post, Xerai, i'm really glad i hooked into your thread as it's ironing out all the gaps of information i had about HTPC's.

Glad to hear that things seem to be going in the right direction now -looks like you'll be buying win 7 in a years time though?

Your temps look fine to me, btw - pretty healthy infact considering the case size and your components.
