im gonna move them to my main rig as the noise there won’t matter can anyone suggest a quite large hdd looking at 400gb+, currently I have two 500gb WD sata hdds for storage and pvr, a Seagate 10gb boot drive no noise there and a 400gb Hitachi for storage which isn’t that noisy.

Or use a laptop drive in the HTPC and use a NAS. :D Buy a larger single quieter drive, or reduce the number of drives in your HTPC and move the other elseware (NAS/server)

Download the ibm/Hitachi feature tool and use this to enable automatic acoustic management settings (should work on WDs)

I got to the point with my HTPC when the HDD were the noisiest part by about 10dBa. Switched to three 2.5" Samsung 160GB drives and its virtually silent (i.e. same as the ambient noise of a quiet room).

All the long term storage is on a NAS and a couple of servers i n another room.
