Behind you... Naked!
Ok, so a couple of months ago, I was stupid enough to assume that the IcyBox 44200-B would actually be worth buying, not only that but I went and got 2.

Hows that for stoopid?

Anyway, I gave one to a mate ( Cos Im nasty like that ) and the one left I have actualyl found a use for ...

Im using it for a temporary drive.

All my downloads go here now, plus all my torrents etc.

Its actually a good idea I think.

Well, its better than throwing it in the bin....probably.

Umm thats the whole point of a NAS so you can stick hdds in it and store your files so everyone on network can have access to them?

I use my NAS to share tv shows and movies around the house to various media streamers.

I know that.

I was talking about the ICYBOX 4220-B

Have you ever had the misfortune of actually using one?

Even though its a Gigabit LAN you will still only be getting 10MB/s - Thats 100 times slower than its supposedly capable of! - I dont mind if they slightly exaggerate the speeds but this thing is slowest than the oldest wireless adapters on the planet.

Sure, I am able to playmedia over the network, btu have you actuyally tried to use it as say, a backup device?

I put a pair of 320GB Drives in there and I decided to backup my kids PCs. I started to copy the D: Drive off my sons PC and I went to town for some shopping and when I came back it had doen next to bugger all. When I went to check, it had copied just marginally over 6GB - in 2 hours FFS!

I then gave up on that idea and instead, I decided to use it for my Game ISOs and use the External drive that I have been using for those and thats a 500GB so they will all fit and a bit extra. again I only managed to copy 100Gb in 3 days... Not funny.

However, when I use it to only copy small files or the occasional large one like a Linux ISO for example, its ok.

I looked at the ICYBOX Nas but the reviews was not that good.
I am now trying to find a NetGear ReadyNas Duo cheap.

No idea what you've done to yours but I got 120mb/s (12mb/s) out of mine. Hardly groundbreaking, but it's a cheap NAS, and more expensive offerings only tend to push 20-33mb/s anyways. Couple that with how customisable the firmware and hardware is and I think it's a pretty good unit for the money.

Yeah, but its the whole Gigabit speeds crap that I fell for.

And why shouldnt I have a moan at it... Whats wrong with wanting what they were supposed to offer.

Putting it simply, they lied - utterly and blatantly, they lied

Not really, you can't get 12mb/s over a Fast Ethernet connection, so it does indeed utilise a gig link. Unless you start paying close to £300 you won't get something that starts to utilise gig in a significant way, hence why many people use ITX builds if they're after raw speed.

What?

No, my network is base 100 and when using my server, I can copy so many files in so much time.

The NAS is supposed to be base 1000 and sur, since my LAN is limited to 100 I fully expect the NAS to be forced down to that speed, however, its not... Its forced down to 10.

Why would they boast about it being a gig when it clearly isnt.

What I am basically stuck with, is a disk storage box thats the same speed as the internet.

You have a problem with your cabling somewhere then. The Icybox will put through around 12mb/s (or 96 mBits/s if you prefer), which in reality you can't achieve on a 100Meg network.

Is there some utility that I can use to test the actual speeds of my network storage ?

I have the server that I obviously use to store files on, and if I copy a file to it from this PC here, its clearly many many many times quicker than when I copy files from the NAS

Copying to the NAS is worse.

Its worse the more you try to copy and so copying a few files at a time is many times quicker than trying to copy the lot.

As for the cabling, it did this when I also tried to connect the NAS directly up to a PC, and I trioed both straight patch and crossover cables and it made no difference.

Although right now, I have the NAS on top of this PC here, and these are both connected to LAN PORT 1 and LAN PORT 2 with the switch connected to PORT 4 and the other PCs are connected to the switch

Ok, in english then, if I was to copy a single 100 MegaByte file to the NAS... How long should it take?

There is a jumper inside the NAS for FAST / SLOW

I have of course tried this but there didnt seem to be any difference at all ?

Again, I have no utility that can time it, its just me going 1...2...3...4 etc etc

100Megabyte file at around 12 Megabyte/sec, that's 100/12 = approx 8 seconds

Don't get me wrong, it IS slower than a server, NAS's are cheap alternatives to running a second PC, and as such are inferior in performance terms.
