My infamous SBS 2008 brings more issues! :D

Hey guys, the sbs server is giving me a headache again, adding client computers back onto the domain under the instruction of my MD. Had an issue where the client pc's were saying there was an issue with something not being up to maximum requirements, I found out this was easily fixed by a server update.

This isn't a MAJOR issue but it is annoying however, even though the clients are definitely online and connected to the server, the SBS console shows them as offline or unknown, does anyone know as to why?

Yes I did

I can't for the life of me remember what it was now, it was one tiny thing I'd overlooked. I think the router was pointing at the wrong place, that bit does seem to work now

Is Windows firewall on the clients turned on?

I've just tried disabling it on a client, I can disable it for home or work networks, public networks, but it won't let me disable it on domain networks

If it won't let you disable the firewall you just need to tweak the group policy settings to remove the block.

This obviously shouldn't be necessary. What OS are the clients running?

Its a DNS issue if the clients are showing as Offline or Unknown on the Console.

Can you ping the clients by Hostname from the server?

All are running W7 Professional

How did you connect the clients to the domain ?

Had to make sure the ipv4 settings were point specifically at the SBS server on 192.168.10.2 and I had to go into advanced, "append dns suffix" and put in the dns address of my server, i.e. myserver.local

That's probably the root cause of your issue. In SBS land, use the wizards, use the wizards, use the wizards. To join PCs to the domain, and assuming SBS is setup OK, on the client browse to: http://connect/ and follow the instructions: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd701006(v=ws.10).aspx

You may need to undo what you have done manually on the client before you attempt the above.

Also if you are getting dns issues make sure DHCP on the server is dishing out the correct DNS.
