My knees really hurt after using the treadmill

Also, another question to ask us what are you doing the rest of the time when your aren't exercising? If the answer is sitting down all day/evening that might be the issue.

Many of us have very sedentary jobs these days and it's actually quite bad for our health/joints.

Might just have dodgy knees, I dont bother running anymore as it ruins my knees. Do other exercises.

I would say this, at least until you raise your overall fitness somewhat. I have a bad knee and when I started exercising in March I was 138kg and there is no way I could jog. I cycled... lots! Now I'm down under 100kg jogging is okay. The first few weeks I had pains (muscular though, not in the knee) and now I think my body has adjusted, I can cope with jogging just fine.

Thank you for all the advice guys.

I will definitely try to break it up and do more stretching before and after.

I am new to this, so I am hoping my body and legs will adjust

I am now also considering to buy a cross trainer.

thanks

You need to be quite fit to run. It's an awful way of getting exercise, constant repetitive movements of only a few muscles joints ligaments etc.

In your day to day life you're more likely to need to pick up heavy stuff, get up and down and climb stuff not run.

Buying stuff won't help. If you really want to scratch to itch to buy then buy some dumbells, less room and will be eternally worth something. Running machines and crosstrainers get old and broken and end up in a landfill.

Going from nothing to 45 minutes of the same movement is going to be painful, try mixing it up.

it's 45 minutes of walking. he isn't even "that" heavy either as in there are people far heavier who have done nothing and did 45 minutes of jogging and had zero knee issues.

i think he likely has knee issues possibly because of incorrect posture, gait, form, shoes. or because of a joint issue caused by incorrect movement or positioning day to day.

i'd say do some leg exercises to strengthen the surrounding muscles. that means weights and squats. it has to be with correct form. focus on form over everything else. incorrect form will make the issue worse. stretching before and after will help too especially with age.

however knees shouldn't really hurt from walking especially on a treadmill. twisting and turning like when playing football is usually what causes pain as well as impact. he is walking not jogging or running so impact is less of an issue especially on a bouncy treadmill.

so i don't see his issues being caused by impact as he's walking on a bouncy treadmill. he isn't twisting or turning either. it's likely an issue with his knees or supporting muscles / joints.

I think what you have at the moment is fine. Rather than do just walking, after your initial warmup include some Squats, Lunges, Calf Raises, Planks and bear crawls into your exercise routine.

These will help build up the muscles around your knees as well as your core muscles.

So, change your routine a little, rather than do 45 minutes fast walking after your warmup, do 15 minutes of those other exercises and then 30 minutes walking. Then do your cool down after.

Rather than do static stretching before and after your workout, spend 15-20 minutes static stretching on the days you aren't running. Just while you are watching TV in the evenings.

I'm not sure how much it helps, but do you take omega 3 fish oil? My joints were hurting after doing weights and cardio, but I started taking up to 6 of these pills a day and I seem to have been fine since.
