My lifestyle is killing me

' The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. '

Long walks and if you haven't got a mountain bike then that is a suggestion. I am putting on more weight than I would like as I think shin splints is kicking in so running etc is out of the question for now.

I suffered from shin splints for a while. Agonising :(

Haly - look harder next time :p Its not as pronounced as you would think reading it on here but its enough for the strain to damage other bits of me :(

but I did some damage coming off the odd mountain bike
Heh, plenty of that here two. My backs pretty painfull due to a couple of bad endos and falls etc. I get the odd limp too by that only seems to be temporary. Do as Haly says, swimming is the way to go.

I think that swimming definately sounds like a good idea. You definately need to get yourself a hobby of some kind that can get you out of the house. Are there any societies at uni that interest you? Perhaps something music-related?

I hadnt thought about swimming until this thread - so thats an improvement.

I cant see it being as easy as going for a swim in the evenings and everything else falling into place but at least I wont get fat and will be tired enough to sleep before 3am!

Well swimmings a good idea. Weight lifting is also a good idea, as noginn says, but only with relatively light weights. (in the meantime atleast).

I used to do weights a lot, not been for a while though, I was getting bigger than I really wanted to be up top and not working my legs enough thanks to the damage etc...

Im sure a few sets on 100Kgs wouldnt hurt tooooo much though :p

you call that big?!

anyway, work on your lower body, with lighter weights, maybe increase the weight after a while.

Doesnt look it in that photo admittedly, nor am I that big compared to the gym addicts but I have no desire to be massive (or even particularly toned, for that matter) just strong enough so that I dont really struggle with things.

The thing about working my lower body is that its damaged and I dont really want to risk making things worse by putting even more stress on the components. I dont have particularly feeble legs as it is so I think I will probably just stick to the swimming for now and hopefully one day my doctor will finally tell me they can give me a knee transplant or something :p

Low weight workouts on the lowerbody should help repair and strengthen muscles. Swimming will do the same sort of thing, but will take longer, but admittedly it will probably be safer too.

I feel like this and that I am wasting a way so to speak and want to change.

So far I have brought some weights and that is going ok I guess, I do miss somedays though but I am getting better at actually doing it often.

I did start swimming (well I went once) and I definately felt better having only gone just once. But my mate does not want to go anymore but stuff it I am going to start going again twice a week after this week (school kids half term, it shall be packed with kids :( and to busy to swim).

Once I start swimming again I hope it does me better and makes me want to do more whilst at home.

Take tonight for example, I am in the process of setting my own website up but low and behold me being lazy and lack of willpower got the better of me and I spent 5 minutes doing it rather than the 3-4 hours planned.

The worst thing I find about myself though is the "I'll do it tommorrow" bit, it annoys me I do it but then I do it again and again

You need commitment tbh, take a girl or something. You sound like an agoraphobic, although school kids do get in the way, try joining a gym with a swimming pool.

Everybody gets the I'll do it tommorow problem, dunno what you can really do about that.

Having just looked at this website (Website Link) I would say that I am a little agrophobic :(, no worries I'll just have to find a way to deal with it but I do not like queing at all and the various things that site says. Anyway this is getting near on a thread hijack :D

As other, more wise, people have already said - go swimming! Damn good excerise, especially for the lungs (as an asthmatic I recommend it) and if you are single it is a good place to meet (or stare at) the girls.

Now here is the unique LordSplodge perspective - go climb a few hills and then a mountain. Sure your knees are a bit broken, but if I can climb them with an average Peak Flow of 300 then you can with your dodgy knees.

In my mind nothing is better* than reaching the peak feeling worn out from all that excerise, lungs burning to just stop and look around. No need to worry about anything just you, the mountain and all the peace you could want.

Just Ben Nevis for me and then it's the three peaks challenge.

Good luck with whatever you do but don't waste away in front of the PC.

* Sex is quite good too!

Just keep moving and don't give in to your injuries, easy to say I know but most ligament/tendon/muscle injuries respond well to exercise as you are supplying the injured area with blood, containing oxygen and nutrients etc which will speed up the healing the process.

If a certain exercise hurts too much just keep experimenting until you find something you can cope with, anything is better than nothing.Ideally you need some sort of resistance training combined with a cardio activity.

Not sure of your diet but obviously this is massively important to your day to day feelings of health and well being,I could go on all night about what you should and shouldn't eat but instead I'll just direct you to what I believe to be the best health and nutrition resource on the web.www.mercola.com

Good luck mate. :)
