My local boxing day hunt

Would all the wannabe political activists just kindly remove themselves from this thread, for crying out loud? I'm quite surprised at the attitude of some people posting here, and that's after the cull of posts too! :( I think that's nothing more than trolling, and wouldnt be put up with in other forum sections, so why here? Get that ban hammer out, mods :)

As for the photos, it has been said (more harshly than i'd put it) but they are just snaps. They're fine compositionally, technically etc.. but nothing jumps out. Obviously you were aiming for these to lead up to some action shots, and not getting those must have been a shame. Better luck next time

I've always wondered, in these conditions would using a flash help at all? Being in that you're bumping the exposure dynamic range to that closer to the bright sky -- so maybe you'd keep more detail in the sky?

The hunt is a big social event so the shots would lose the feel without the crowds in the background.

Reason I like 2 is it's the only one you can see the excitement in the dogs and get a feel for the atmosphere.

Jokester, two points to make here. (1) I was giving my opinion, the subject matter is boring, so the photos are nothing more than snapshots of (2) in my opinion horay henries on horses.

Now I know it must be great to have admin priviledges and be able to delete peoples posts at the push of a button, but perhaps you should just back off and let people give their views, as that is what was asked for here.

If you insist on shooting an event like this, why not try a different perspective? Shoot from behind bushes to add some aspect of being hidden to your photographs. This could be from the viewpoint of a fox or from a spectator.

Taking straight up photographs like this is neither interesting to look at, nor original - therefore you have to find a way to add more interest to this 'meeting'.

If your first post had been as constructive as your second and didn't contain the tone of disdain towards the subject matter it wouldn't have been removed.

Jokester

The new acclaimed height of the photography forum in the ocuk structure has lead for more idle clickers adding a bit of banter and pointless posting but nevermind. humax...

I love the sharpness and the saturation on number 3, it may be a little harsh but it works well, especially with the smugness of the man's face, fits the bill. Unfortunately though the images seem a bit flat, and I'm not sure why, it's annoying that the sky is overblown to bright white too, blame the weather. :p

I love how sharp those pcistures have come out and how vibrant the colours, especially reds, have come out. Would have been cool to see of the horses running but oh well :)

thanks for the tip regarding the flash, the only thing im wondering is if it would cause issue with the horses, scare them or anything

these were mainly just snaps to give a feel for the occasion, leading up to the action shots, but unfortunatly i was given the wrong advice as to which exit they were taking, so i ended up being int he wrong place.

thanks everyone for the constructive advice given so far. Just so its clear the critique i was after was on the technical aspect of the pics. in no way was i asking about the politics of this or if people approved of it or not. the photography forum is not the place to discuss things like that. maybe i should have put up a disclaimer or something.

I hope from now on we can keep to the subject.

Hmn just to make it clear, i was only thinking out loud. I was wondering if anyone would let us now whether or not that would work! And you're right about scaring the horses -- it might be a problem.

I think these are really nice! Although I don't agree with the subject matter the detail and saturation of these images is really nice, and the way you have captured a very british tradition.

What camera/lens combination did you use?

I like the last one, and the one with the two chaps side by side. The only thing that lets down the shots is the typically bad weather. They'd be great with a better sky. Get photoshopping :p

canon 350d + 17-40L for all shots apart from number 2 which was taken with the 100-400L.

@Scam - i know you were mate, so was i. didnt mean to cause any offence or anything ;)
