Very cool, I always intended to build a bartop cab (and a cocktail), had all the plans/graphics completed but one of those hobbies that I stopped and never got back into (kids/job/etc).

I still have the controller portion wrapped up in storage, rest of the cab got binned. :(

basic start today. Designed and started cutting the enclosure. Sourced a 8" 4:3 LCD monitor and started to fix it together.

This will be a longer build than the little GBA ones, because of parts etc.

I just wish I managed to get a raspberry Pi today to power it :-(

Might have been asked before but i don't recall... how come you are building these? Bored? Testing yourself? Building up a portfolio for future job applications? Workout out how much it costs to build such things in hope to sell in bulk?

Well by profession I design and invent new toys and gadgets.

I build stuff all the time, these are just for fun and because I like arcade units.

I am also a member of www.buildbrighton.com - Brighton's hacker space. The reason I am making a MAME cab is because a buddy and myself decided to make one way before I did the GBA ones.
 
Ok, I need a way to interface the buttons and stuff to a PC.

I took an old PS2 Logitech Keyboard, and connected up some terminal points. These are wired to the row and colum matrix. So press a button and the PC gets a W, move the joystick right it gets an X etc...

Will fab up a little box to make it nice and neat.

Yup, I have my own laser cutter, makes things easier!

The jigsaw fittings are cool, they will be hidden from view in the final.
 
Got some buttons and a joystick in.

All works with my little keyboard hack.

Pinter, as always your projects are a true inspiration :)

You a true Hacker in the MiT original sense (not the one now used to describe crackers :mad:).

I love watching your projects progress so please don't ever stop doing them :)

Ok, Not had time to do work on the mini cab for a bit.

Ordered a few components:

An Intel Atom 1.8Ghz mini ITX
Sata -> CF Flash adapter
8Gb 133x CF card
120W ITX PSU

Got it all test fitted in, buttons and joystick all wired up too.

Amazingly it all fits. The whole back hinges down like a Mac so you can access everything. Secured when back up by some neo magnets which are v strong.
