My MX Revolution is skipping, but...

My Logitech MX Revo mouse is skipping, but for some reason I don't think its the mouse that is the problem...
Originally I thought my mouse was ****ed. Until last night my battery ran dead and was forced to use my house mates Logitech (forgot model) mouse and that was also skipping! -it was fine on his computer.

What the heck is wrong? Is it because of my 5+ year old Advent 3217?!

Wow, seriously they just gave you a new one just like that?! (Dave18 & malc30)

My MX revolution mouse is skipping, it the cursor freezes a lot. Its really annoying, the receiver is about 70cm away, at the same level.
But on another note. I have set up my mouse as a media control. So I can go downstairs and click "next" on my mouse and the music upstairs will change. so I don't think range is the problem here....

21/09/2006 is the date I purchased the MX (1 year 6 months of use) but its been skipping just after 1 years of use, I didn't do anything about it, instead I purchased a mouse matt hoping it would solve the problem, it kind of did. for 1 month. But now its really annoying and I would like to get it replaced.
I really expected this mouse to last longer than just over 1 year...

PS I am using the Steelseries mouse matt, £13 from OCUK.

Please star swear words fully - Zefan.

You might want to edit out the swearing there, even partially starred isn't good enough I'm afraid. :)

Have you tried the mouse without a mousemat if you think that the mouse itself isn't at fault? Have you checked to see if there are any known incompatabilities with that particular combination?

Your southbridge could be overheating.
Is the system overclocked at all? Does it have many case fans?
Have you done all virus and anti-spyware scans?

Do you have any hard drives that are plugged in, but no power running through them?

I got banned for 2 days for partially swearing, Fudging jokes I tell ya. :D

Anyway....

While I was banned I thought I would re-arrange my setup.
1. I relocated the tower onto the floor. (didnt really wanna do this as it gets dusty very quick)
2. Moved the external HDD as far away as possible from the tower.
3. Unplugged all unused cables such as ipod cable, camera cable and printer cable etc etc.

After doing the above, it seems my mouse doesn't want to skipp anymore....
BUT, I do get that common MX Revolution Charging Error....sometimes. And when its not a problem, the battery only lasts 1 full days of use, compared to when I first got it, it lasted over 1 week! http://youtube.com/watch?v=owZ7cJIA57I

I found it worked slightly better with matt.

Southbridge? whats that?
System is NOT overclocked. I have added 1 exhaust fan.
I have done anti-spyware yes. But I don't see how this could affect the mouse.

I had an external WD 500gb HDD plugged in via USB, the power is on 24/7.
But I do have 6 total USB ports and they are all filled up, but not all are in use for example IPod cable, Sony Digital camera cable, Printer Cable, Wireless adaptor cable(for internet)

Wireless interfering?

It could well be, ever since I got this Netgear wireless adaptor, every 2 mins or so I would get some sort of interference, this is VERY annoying when watching movies etc. So I am forced to disconnect the wireless adaptor when watching movies.

I had a similar problem with my MS Sidewinder. Tried several mouse mats, software settings etc. In the end it turned out to be a cat hair across the sensor...

I have cleaned the laser mouse and receiver with cloth/air spray.

Just a though, after typing all that, would the power cables or telephone wires affect the problem I am having? :o

Try it on a sheet of paper, if it stops your mouse just isn't loving your mat.

Also, why 70cm away? Move it closer, might help - there's much more data travelling to move your pointer than just skip tracks. I've never had a wireless more than a foot away, even though it 'works' further.

I don't use the Logitech software anymore as this caused my meeces to skip.

Since I stopped using their software many years ago, none of my Logitech mice have skipped, and I have had a few. The Microsoft mice I have used in the past have never skipped and always work out of the box.

The majority of Logitech's software is not needed anyway, and, it is bloatware in anycase.

Havn't got the logi drivers on mine, theyre the standard Microsoft drivers. It's been fine for nearly 6 months just decided now it wants to skip.

Is CPU usage in task manager?
Its usually quite low, I try to keep it low anyway. I havent took notice of what its at when this is happening though....

CPU temp? ...On SpeedFan is it temp 2? well it ranges from 44 to 50+

Will the heat affect it?

I was wondering if you're cpu was throttling for some reason.

Not sure which is your cpu in speed fan as all are different.

i have had the same issue with a logiteck G7 gaming mouse it appears to something to do with the driver's they have now and one of the windows xp update's i was never able to narrow down which one it was so i got another mouse.
i would clean the system of all logitech drivers and all win updates up to sp1
then install drivers again and install each os update one by one when prob come's back remove that update and add the rest should be fine.

Can I just add to this topic RE: the MX. I also get the skipping problem sometimes, and I can say 100% that it's to do with interference.

If I plug my MX receiver into one of the USB ports at the back of my PC I have the problem. If however I plug it into a USB extension (I use one that came with my Belkin wireless dongle) and keep it away from my tower I never get any problems.

Do what this guy says

Bring the receiver closer,

All metals are opaque at RF frequencies so you really need a direct LOS if you can

I have many problems with my aluminium mouse mats and thismouse

Hi guys. Yeah I did think about bringing the receiver closer but then again, its a £60 mouse, it shouldn't need it in my opinion. But yeah I may purchase an USB extension.... any recommendations? do OCuk sell any?
