And it shouldnt be if you are near the public highway....its is after all an offence to have a dog off the lead on the path or near a road, for this exact reason!

If an accident occurs, it is the owners fault, and any damage will have to be paid through their pet insurance (if they have it!)

Thing is if something comes out infront of you, your very first instinct is to move out the way. I'd be surprised if most people's first thought was to move out the way rather than just hit whatever it was :(

My first reaction when something jumps out in front of me is to jam on the binders.

But I grew up with 6 foot deep ditches on each side of the road. In that kind of a situation you NEVER swerve. For ANYTHING!! Not even another person or another vehicle.

Dropping into a 6 foot deep ditch filled with water at 60mph is NOT a good thing.

Glad to hear you are alright and that there's stil salvageable parts from the car. Could have been a lot worse if the tyre that hit the curb caught and flipped you......

I don't advise running over any dogs for the sake of a few signs and a car as it might be my Frank staffy dog. Keyboard warrior comments aside i think everyone here knows what i would do to someone who run my Frank over.

See it's all very well to say dog > car and if it were that simple, I agree.

But what you also have to consider is what could also happen whilst you crash your car while avoiding an errant dog. Death or serious injury to yourself and anyone coming the other way is a possibility depending on the road and speeds involved, would you still always swerve?

I had a close call with a dog a few weeks back.
It ran out in front of me, iut came up past my side door and stood in front of the car
I hit the brakes and crunched through the gears to slow the car.
I didnt swerve i just kept going straight bit had the car moving to the side of the road.
I stopped before the dog. If i had swerved then there could have been a lot of damage to the car.
Ill try stop for a dog or an animal that jumps out oin front but if it doesnt move and i cant stop then im going to go straight through it(even though i hate hitting living things)

Down here its illegal to swerve for an animal aswell

Bad luck about your car mate.
Looks like uve got irish luck on your side though :D
4 leaf clover 4tw

Your supposed to never swerve to avoid an animal in an HGV, and I'd suppose its not a great idea in any moving vehicle situation.

Ideally, weigh up the risks / concequence of swerving to avoid x against y - a kid / building / tree?

Alas, were all mortals and such things don't happen in real life  , its an instinctive reaction to try and swerve (consider if what you thought it was an animal, was infact a small child? )

Glad your ok mate, car can be fixed, another one for the lessons archive. ;)

I gotta agree, I never swerve for animals - its not that I don't want to, but its just too dangerous and likely to cause a much worse accident. That said I'd feel very bad if I hit a cat/dog/someone's pet.

Looks like it would be salvageable if it was a (imaginary) 5-door Corrado :(

I do agree with you mate but as i earlier said it's more of an instinctive reaction rather than a considered reaction.
Accidents happen and when they do if you are lucky enouth not to injure anything or anyone then you just have to count yourself lucky.

Unlucky mate.

On the dog issue, sometimes its a reflex action to swerve - no time to think or identify what the animal is, so its not really a choice.
Therefore its not really possible to critise the decision. :)

Glad you're ok mate, shame to see the car like that, but you're ok and thats the main thing.

Crikey, that is some damage there!

You are lucky to have survived that - there is loads of damage on that door there.

Anyway, not sure how much it will be to replace that door and knock the dents out, but I suppose give ebay and the breakers a try to see if they can sort you out with a new door.

That alloy looks in bad shape too, but I trust you have a spare for that? Just a shame that once alloys go, you have to replace the whole lot normally :(

Oh come on lets not get over-dramatic here.

actually the policemen said that they had had a fatality there recently where a similar thing happened to someone coming the other way, they had missed the signs on their side of the road and impacted with the telegraph pole right in the drivers door. Died in hospital a few days later.

Both the policemen and the AA bloke where impressed by the strength of the car.

Anyway, the car may not be a write off, had a accident repair bloke down to examine it and said it would be until he examined underneath and inside, seems the floor has really been effected. He is going to book it in for a proper examination to see if its all square then quote me the rest.

However, i cant get any local garage (at least one thats any good) to even consider swapping the engines over, either lack of experience or are worried about the wiring! :(

UPDATE

well, the local accident repair shop has been in touch, so far the quote is around the £4000 mark  but he is going to see what he can do for me about it!!

For £4500 i can buy and ex-show car, a corrado VR6 2.9 engine, metallic purple exterior and nice wheels. Full leather interior and excellent service history.
