Not really sure I've had to put the 3com in because my netgear broke (which is a pain as the 3com is really noisy) which means i haven't really tested throughput rates on the switch anyway.
 
Ok, general question for anyone then, how close to their theoretical maximum throughput do wired networks get?

Because if they only get to about 70-80% of their theroetical max, then its probably network limited, however if they normally get near 100% it must be limited by something else.

On a 100Mbit network environment youll get ~ 8-11MBs
On a 1000Mbit network environment youll get ~ 20 - 25MB's

Gigabit is a strange one because in theory, perfect conditions for gigabit should be closer to 100MB's

But it does depend on hardware used, CAT6e cables? Managed Gigabit Switches? Peer-Peer or Client/Server? Teaming used on servers?

The fastest ive seen is arround 80-90MB's using Dual teamed gigabit network adapters on HP servers and a HP procurve managed switch using LLCP.

You can sometimes scam a bit more speed by enabling jumbo packets on gigabit networks. Good for those large file transfers.

I wonder when we'll start seeing mainstream 10GbaseT equipment available to buy.

Yep switches/routers and ethernet adapters have to support it I believe.

I think all the Intel adapters do, but you have to really dig into the specifications of routers/switches to find if its supported or not.

That suggests that this is network limited then, which means i can go and get myself a low spec pc off the 'bay and a sata card and a couple of disks and make myself a fileserver. :)

It will do just fine, pop a Netgear GA311 gigabit card in ~ £10 from well known site and your on your way.
 
But then i need a new router, netgear dg834g isn't gigabit and is getting a little long in the tooth anyway (and it refuses to talk to my netgear wireless card but thats another story...), and i suppose i'll need a gigabit card in the media centre pc when i get round to building it unless i use an expensive board with it bult in...

Thanks for your help anyway, i'll go and do a little shopping on that well known aution site and see what can be had for what... :)
 
Damn, thats a rather neat setup you got. You definatly should upgrade to gigabit then you can really play with the network :D.
