Anyway, i would have ordered an X1900XT during the specials & an X2 3800+ as an upgrade for my aging A64 3000+ & X800GTO2 (modded) but for various reasons never ended up buying either. Well yesterday i was in a local store chatting to one of the store workers about graphics cards. My cousin wanted me to buy a card for about £150. I was looking at the 7600GT, X1800GTO & even X1800XL. Discussing my thoughts & prices of cards i was after, the young guy in the store said he though a 512MB card would suit me better.
Infact if i was prepared to pay a little more he said he had what he though would be ideal. I was interested & also wondered as to what the card might be: 7300GS 512MB? Now it turns out this was the last card of this type & was considered old stock. He offered the card to me for £210 inc VAT.

Now he brings out the box & it turns out this is a brand new ...
7800GTX 512MB ... what transpired next was me trying to keep the smile off my face, long enough to pay for the card & quickly get out of the store. I still cant believe the price. :) [Suffice to say, I still need to get my cousin a card.]

Now to upgrade my CPU.

but that young guy might have to pay for it out of his own pocket. If it was a big shop it wont matter but i take it this was a small shop.

Well at least you didn't get ripped off paying £210 for a 7300GS 512MB (£50 on OcUK)

Nice going with the card btw; I'd do the above and go for the 7900GT + Cash :D

Did you do good? - no

If they had given you a 7300 when you went in to buy a 7800 you'd be screaming about how they ripped you off , the other way around and you expect to be applauded?

Just hope that store worker (probably on minimum wage) doesn't have to pay for his mistake, assuming he doesn't get sacked for the error.

Still feeling 'good' about the card?

I'm sure he's feeling just fine ;)

He didn't "go in to buy a 7300" though, and neither did he get offered one, he just made a reference to a 7300GS because of how poor they are, and how small shops usually overcharge.

Go troll elsewhere

As for ACESHIGH, well done mate, cracking deal, shame they didn't have two you could have

Well i would say good going if it was a large shop but i cant stop feeling for the young guy in the shop if they told him off or took it from his pay.Just think that young lad is on £200 or less a week if he had to pay it back then no money for a week.
I would think twice how old was this kid ?

The employers should make sure the lad had decent enough knowledge to work in the shop, Im sure as hell I would make sure my stock was in safe hands if it was my shop. Maybe the lads dad owned the shop? in that case he is probably loaded anyway, lol :)

The morality of some on this forum astounds me....

So, it's ok to rip a shop off as long as it's a big one, or you suspect the owners loaded?

I know you won't, but the decent thing to do would be to take it back and sort out the mistake.

As well as that, finding yourself the beneficiary of such a mistake is one thing, but then people congratulating you for it just about sums up what's wrong in the world...

Anyway, I'll get off my high horse now lest I get altitude sickness! ;)

Karma will sort it all out in the end....

He was offered the graphics card at that price and he accepted?

It's not as if he's gone in with the intention to rip the shop off and tried to convince them it's worth less than it is.

He's informed he would benefit from a 512MB card...he's told they have one for £210...shop worker goes off to find the card, comes back and willingly sells the card to him.

What's he supposed to do, go back and say "sorry, this is too much of a bargain, I want to pay more for it"

edit: And what makes you think it was a mistake on the shop assistant's part...maybe the owner couldn't shift the thing and therefore cut the price just to get rid of it?

Being honest here but I don't think for one minute that these moralistic keyboard warriors would think twice about accepting a card of that spec for that price irrespective of the shops size or the ignorance of the real value of the card on behalf of the sales asst.

Nothing aids a negative viewpoint quite like a forum.

I bet aceshigh's receipt says "Whatever brand 7800GTX - 209.99" or whatever. It's not like it was priced up wrong, it was that a small shop had no real outlet for such a card at their £400 - £500 price tag. At retail I bet nvidia slashed these cards to 7900GT prices - but no stores had them - except this one. The store will be like "Good work shifting that £200 card lad" to the guy who served him. If you are posting here saying that aceshigh has done anything wrong - get back under your bridge.
