My dads impulse buy on a volvo 850 2.5 auto failed quite badly, because its now 6 weeks since he got it. and its leaking oil VERY badly.

We have found out its the rear seal thats gone, which is a gearbox out job. One of the engine mounts is screwed, and the engine is breathing heavily (mind it has done 179k) but it drives great, and it still does even with these problems.

So...hes having my Volvo 740 Estate which has so far proved 100% reliable in the 7 months ive owned it (and it got me to le mans and back fully loaded), not bad for £100.

So that left me carless, untill i saw a nice car on ebay.

(hope i can link to it)
Its a 740 Turbo, given its got 11 months MOT and tax till december (i'll cash that in and get it taxed disabled anyway). Given the list of new parts its got on it too, i think its a bargain for £500

Insurance at 22 with 1NCB is only £30 more than my 740 estate (£350)

Opinions? (and yes i know i could have got a mondeo!)

Personally I like it but then I'm weird :p. I hope the turbo doesn't give you any trouble :).

shouldnt do, its only been on for 40k. Normally id be vary of a turbo on an engine with that many miles, but as its not too old, it should be ok :)

I love these Turbo Volvo's!

They remind me of how the Rover Turbo's used to be... before every chav and his dog got hold of one :(

Ultimate sleepers

Looks in superb condition as well.

Can you up the boost on that thing at all for cheap?

according to the guys on the volvo owners club, yes i can, with a manual boost controller. How reliable this is though, i dont know.

182BHP as standard. a bit of messing around and im sure i could see 200BHP. Id be happy at that. I dont really want to put the turbo under too much strain. I want the car to last me a while first!

I wouldnt really say they were ultimate sleepers as they probably weigh the same as the Rock of Gibraltar! :o They arent going anywhere fast.

Nice purchase dude. I keep looking at old 240 series estates and have to resist spending the Oldsmobile Run And Repair Fund on one.....

The turbo on my Saab 9000 is the original unit and that was fitted 241000 miles ago.

Yes very high from what I've seen on t'internet. And much bigger turbos seem to be quite happy on there too :D

lol, yeah that's true :D

But, fit a dump valve to an old Volvo and it'll turn heads for sure!

Fit a massive turbo and turn the boost up, and you're going to annoy at least one Impreza Sport owner :p :D (no offence to any of the Sport owners on this forum)

My 740 estate didnt weigh that much at all actually, so this will be even less :D I dont think it will be standard for long. We shall have to see.

they are't that heavy, it weighs 1373KG

so thats 132BHP/tonne :D

B230ET!!!!!

Awesome engine.

Get your ass on turbobricks.com and liberate another 50 horses ;)

*n (wanting a 360 or 480 with a B230ET)

I still want me a 240, I don't know why but ever since you made that thread with some lovely 240's I have liked them. What sort of engine's are in them?

Ahhh...sweet, sweet ignorance.

As mentioned above, they weigh about as much as the average Mondeo.

Also, when a volvo has leather, it has proper, thick leather - none of this proto-vinyl crap you get nowadays.

Yeah, look at the link to my 740GLE at the top of the page, the leather in that is proper thick stuff. Looks brand new still!

240 engines - 2.0 non turbo. (not sure if there is 2.0 turbo) but they come with the same engines as the 700 series pretty much so theres the 2.3 non turbo (B230) and the turbo (B230ET) :D
