Hey, so in December i built an i7 rig, ive been away from the forum for a long time using it generally and seeing how its been going.

My main problem is with my operating system, im sure this will be easily answered. I am running windows 7 RC1 is this going to handicap my pc in speed atall, I started with Vista (SP1 ?) and it seemed ok but not amazingly different to my old single core AMD PC in speed, windows 7 seems little different to vista. So my point is whats THE best operating system choice etc tog et the most from my pc, and could anything be handi capping it as it feels like for £1200 it should be better.

Sorry if anything is stupid or ive overlooked anything, i can help with more info on request.

Windows 7 is the most technologically advanced choice (for Windows), but Vista is the most complete because it's a final product.

Neither choice should affect your speed much; although Windows 7 should be a smidgen faster. Make sure your system is free of junk files and it isn't running too many processes.

Windows 7 64bit RC1 at the moment. And it is free until you decide whether to buy it or not in June 2010.

yeah i only have 3 gig ram so im guessing 64bit is pointless.

Ill prob reformat and try again, probably have to many processes running as im not expert on keeping all of them down and have all these random ones running. Windows 7 it is then i guess? I just want raw speed i havent had any craches from Win 7 yet in 2 months of use.

Windows 7 is by far the fastest OS I've used to date on my system, so in theory it should be just as fast for you.

Best thing to do is make sure your not installing bloatware on your PC, for instance my Anti-Virus choice is the new Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a lot more light weight than the likes of Norton, plus then there is no need to run anti-spyware software as it is built in.

There also usually not much of a need for a Firewall if you are using a router, I've found the built in Windows firewall is fine. You should also defragment your PC on a regular basis, I usually do it once per week. I also run CCleaner on a daily basis to delete all the crap files left behind from programs you have used, I would really recommend you download CCleaner.

To be fair, it must be some of the software you are installing which might be slowing your system down. I doubt it is a driver issue as under Windows 7 the only drivers I've needed to install are my Graphics card's drivers, as the chipset and LAN drivers come built into Windows 7.

Maybe make a list of the software you have got installed and we can tell you weather your installing any bloatware and point you in the direction of alternatives?

Also sounds like RAM is your main system hold-back. For the cost of RAM at the moment you really should have more. It is amazing how much RAM is used by Vista / Windows 7 by Superfetch, etc. and it does make a difference.

Also leave the Windows Firewall on - a hardware firewall on your router is not the same as having something client based which you should always have until you invest in a decent firewall. Windows Vista automatically defrags itself depending on what your system is doing so if you leave it on it'll get around to it after a set amount of time.

Become an expert on this. Google is your friend as far as processes are concerned.

Crapware will slow down your machine way more than your choice of OS.

yeah i knew this but things like AVG and Adaware seemed essentials to me, otherwise i cut down everything else, themes, windows sidebar, startup programmes etc.

Macky is right! And Reflux -- thank you very much for your support! Yes, Windows 7 RC is free to use through next year but will only be available for download through August 15th of this year. For those of you still using Windows 7 Beta (build 7000), you may want to upgrade to the RC or revert back to your old OS by using your restore discs as Win 7 Beta will begin to shutdown every two hours beginning July 1st.

For more information on Windows 7 RC, Microsoft does have a site with whitepapers, tutorials, walkthroughs and screen casts on all the “under the hood” features in Win 7. Check out the Springboard site for Windows 7 on TechNet here http://*******.com/832nco
