...my own DDNS if I have my own domain name?

Hi all,

I'm trying to help a friend setup remote viewing for his CCTV (to access the DVR)

....now we have to use DDNS from someone like DynDNS.com

...But I was thinking would it be possible to have your own DDNS service if you had your own domain name?

Your friend would need to have a static or Fixed IP Address from their ISP - You would then be able to setup a A NAME record to point the the IP Address of the CCTV cam - For example cctv.domainname.co.uk = YOUR IP

You could setup a DDNS service but you would need to run your own Nameservers with a low TTL to ensure the addresses update quickly throughout the world.

Alternatively, use the standard DDNS but on your domain setup a CNAME record to point to the DDNS record so you get the fast update, a bit awkward but would work ok just for a couple of hosts.

Best way would be just a static address then wouldn't need a domain name. What ISP is your friend on??

Some DynDNS type services allow you to use your own domain name with their service.

I cheat, I setup a CNAME from my domain to the DynDNS name and use their free service. It means an extra DNS lookup but it doesn't get used enough to be a worry.
