My patio plan of attack

Soundood, no threshold on the back door?

yeah the slabs look far too high, could cause a problem with damp and would be an issue should he want to sell
also im not a fan of sweeping in a dry mix, we use it moist enough to be able to make a ball that just about holds together (if that makes sence) and pack it in hard and run a jointing iron over it, it goes off nice and solid whereas a dry mix stays a bit crumbly imo and is more prone to frost damage as it hasnt been sealed
each to their own though.. theres a few ways we can get this cat skinned :p

slabs are perfect height to back door, the whole patio is seperated from the house with a 15cm gap, this is in filled with white gravel stones, with drain channel below damp course.

the door area is butted upto door with no gap, this was damp proofed before hand to ensure no issues

the was done intentionaly, as my daughter is in a wheelchair, we had a ramp previously, but i raised the height of the whole garden to bring it level to back door, the dampcourse was in place at the back door, from the previous ramp build

here you are, a pic speaks a thousand words,

ahh ok, fair doo's :)

MOT type 1 is usually the same price, but as u are mixing cement in with the sand, its not really necassary for a patio.
The OP linked to the precast concete slabs, that is why i said about screeding, but if he decided to use Indian Sandstone, then its slightly different.
Older sandstone slabs are different thickness, and have to be laid individually, but we use a full bed of mortar, never spotted.
Newer sandstone slabs come calibrated now, so are same thickness and can be laid as i said above.

Whats the best way to get rid of the soil you dig out?
Use a skip hire company?

If you cut the turf up neatly you can roll it up and run it down your local tip then bag any loose or spread it about if you have room, skips are dear £185 - 220 for a 8yd skip rubble bags are 10p each and you can use them over and over.

Good work!

yep, set up skip, dump what you dont need. biggest skip you can get for soil/heavy waste is an 8 yard skip.

I'll not mention you can get 20yd skips 20yd & 40yd roll on off skips :p

Anyway loading a skip is an art, this is my latest creation, like a puzzle

maccapacca, you got your moneys worth with that skip :D. Did they not moan about that? I managed to get an old shed inc base, 1 x 3 seater and a 2 seater settee, full kitchen and some other bits and bobs in a skip. Even bent over nails to stack the wood closer together :D.

mpledge52, deffo check out some prices at local builders yards. Go in scruffy clothes and pretend you're in the trade and ask for their trade price. They will also usually deliver for free if local, my local builders merchant does anyway. Beats Wickes ridiculous £38 charge.

The driver turned up, looked at it, looked at me, decided he better just take it :p come to think of it I had just spent £36,000.00 on skips with them so I suppose they 'wanted to please the customer' ;) his back leg of the wagon did sink into the footpath which meant me buying a bag of bitmac repair, it was like a small sink hole in the footpath.

Does anyone lay weed control fabric under patios?
Or doesn't it make much difference.

Not really you lay weed control under bark and soft finishes, problem is after a while it gets blocked with silt, nothing is growing through the slabs so the only chance you have is the joints.

It's best practise and standard SMM7 standard to weedkill after excavation.

4 gardeners question time (GQT) recommend pouring boiling water on weeds, ie drain your spaghetti over the weeds on your drive, nice natural weed killer and better than chucking it down the sink.

I always buy my weed killer off Ebay, considerable stronger brands than what you buy in the shop.

bitslice: 25 litre drums readily available on Ebay.:)
