Hi guys,

Came to turn my PC on this morning, pressed the on button a few times and it wouldn't turn on at all. Just seemed as if their was no power going to it. After pressing the on button about 10 times or so, I left it as I had to nip out.

When I came back in, my PC was just turned on and booted up... Strange.

I turned it on and off a few times again to see if it was OK, but it wasn't, when I switched it off it wouldn't come back on again.

Is this a PSU issue? I don't have another PSU because I only have old ones that have a 4 pin power connector, whereas on this motherboard it needs an 8 pin.

Any ideas?

Cheers

You can still get away with 4 pin for cpu power, but my personal choice would be to remove or lower any overclock.

Hi mate - No overclock on it at the moment. The PC wont even turn on at all when I press the on button so I can't get into the bios anyway.

Could be a dodgy button, tried shorting the pins on the mobo directly?

How would I do that?

Also, I've just tried my 4 pin PSU, plugged it all in, turned it on and it went BANG. Sparks and smoke! Turned it around and realised it was on 115 voltage

It might be that the CMOS is corrupt? Try using jumpers to reset your CMOS. This happened to a friend of mines PC shortly after he installed some new RAM.

well, the power button connects to 2 pins on the motherboard, connecting them together starts the PC. I usually use a penny to do it.

If there's smoke and sparks, something isn't right at all, I would not have tried it in another PC after that!
I suggest you get another PSU ASAP and do not use the smokey one at all, it has been damaged and there's no telling what might happen.

PSU Blew because I stupidly set it to the US voltage lol. The original PSU is fine as I've tried it in my other PC's.

So, I need to get the power on button that connects to the motherboard and put it against a penny and it should turn on? Or am I misunderstanding

two leads connect from the power button to the mobo, unplug them and then touch them both on the same penny coin. if it doesnt start its a problem with your mobo/something else. if it does start, it's most likely a problem with your power button.

Cheers mate, will give it a try after work. I have the connectors 'PWR_Switch' PWR_+ and PWR+-

I suppose I touch all of these 3 to a penny?

Cheers

Plug it in :P lol

Thanks for the contribution.

On a serious note, I don't know if I've done it right but I took the button connectors off the mobo, put them on to a penny so the connectors were face down, tried to turn the PC via the case button and it still wouldn't power on.

Is it new mobo time now?

There should be 2 connections, not 3. The PWR+/- are for the power LED.
Can we assume nothing at all happens? Brief fan spin?
If I've read everything correctly, the PSU works in another PC, if it won't start in this one then it's new mobo time.
Just re-read the last comment, what did you try? You want to place the penny on the 2 power switch pins on the mobo. The penny acts as the switch you just removed, it should startup right away.

Appears I did it wrong then ! Oh well I'm getting a new mobo now. Tried the mobo in a different PC aswell and it wouldn't boot with that power button so I don't have an option now really.
