hi there, im currently fixated with jitsu and until 2 months ago i was trianing once a week for 2.5 hours with nothing in between. I was 18.5 stones when i started very unfit, cardiovascularly and mentally. im only 5ft 7 and as you can tell ym bmi is off the scales. im 29 and played rugby up (hooker) until now but lost my fitness the last couple of years due to work and a serious knee injury. all these situations are fixed now.

im now training 2 times a week or even 3 times a week if i can, ive lost a stone and a half in the last 2 months. but its starting to steady out. im now 17 stone and find that when in jitsu comps i get put in the heavy weight category and am competing against 6ft 6 monsters who are 22 stone and fit with it.

so realistically i train 2x2.5 and a max 3x2.5 hours a week ive cut my crappy diet out and now eat very healthily, no butter, skimmed milk no processed rubish, my only weekness is chocolate and i have a square of lindt 85% cocoa chocolate a day.

eat 3 meals a day and drink 2.5-3 litres of water a day.

so whats next for me im very strong and i know i have a high muscle mass, but i also know i have a wobbly belly lol. id seriously like to get into jitsu properly but im finding over the belts with no belt a problem due to my size and inflexability.

any diet, exercise and martial art gurus in here to suggest any plans for me.

i dont like gyms, i dont like running but ipods are wicked for blockng out the pain. i would rather exercise usng my own boddy mass and free weights.

cheers peeps

Well definitely get some sort of free weights program going, you will burn more calories just doing your day to day routine with a bit more muscle.

Try to eat little and often to keep the metabolism high.

How about swimming or cycling for the cardio work? Both are low impact which is good for a heavier guy (I have enough problems with running at 16st).

I think you need to make a decision about what you want to do.

1 - bulk up and be a beast for your size and give the heavyweights a run for their money

2 - slim down so that your in a weight that is more appropriate for your size.

3 - get so hardcore in your jitsu that the weight difference means nothing as you are superior to the weaklings that are heavier than you.

Now, once you have made a decision, you can start to follow a better path to that goal.

well 3 is the ultimate for any martial artist i think?

but in all reality number 2 id like to be 14.5 stones and rock solid and cardiovascularly fit.

I had to make the same decision. I went with being as strong as physically possible in a lower weight class. My reasoning for this is that in most jitsu comps the upper weight category has no boundaries so as you say you end up against 250lb monsters.

Plus the more jitsu you do, theoretically you should be relying more on technique rather than just raw strength. Strength is always going to be the deciding factor in any fight between two equally matched people though, which is why I think it's better to be the strongest in a lower weight class.

time for some hard work doing things you dont like then im afraid :p

plenty of cardio is the order of the day with a diet that is about 500 calories under your maintenance calorie intake.
cardio pre breakfast
weights in the evening

that will help you lose weight and body fat while helping to retain your strength.
then when your at your target weight you can start to put on some lean mass :D
