my phenom 965 c3 clocking

This is tearing me apart! Trying to decide between the i5 750 and the 125w 965 at the moment and there's all sorts of advantages with each, and now I've heard about the 'smoothness' with the AMDs, that's starting to lean me toward them more.

Does anyone in here own both?

I've owned both an i7 @3.8ghz and Phenom @3.8ghz (then went back to i7) and there was no difference, it's just one of those myths that has popped up because AMD can't compete on raw performance.

Thanks! Yeah, it seems a bit far fetched really. Especially as the games I can run well on my current system are 100% smooth, and my current chip is a bargain bucket Intel dual core. Surely the i5 will definitely have better latency etc than this?

The "smoothness" theory arises from the fact that AMD had an integrated memory controller for far longer than intel (who only have it on i7 and i5 750, but not i3 and i5 dual cores).

Ahh right, so in theory, the i5 750 with the integrated memory controller should be just as 'smooth' as the 965?

Got my new cpu cooler today, i did a test everything on auto no overclock, my ram is Gskill 1600mhz, 7-7-7-24 but told by Gskill support that it will only run at 8-7-7-24 i have it set at that 1600mhz and 1.6v , when i run Prime95 on blend, it doesnt crash pc, but prime95 gives error on one of the cores , hardware failure, so now i put ram on auto, set it self to 1333, 9-9-9-24 and been running prime95 on blend for 30mins now no errors, so do you thing the timings at 1600mhz was the cause ?

Thanks

I'm talking from experience I went from a i7 920 @3.8ghz to Phenom 965 @3.8ghz and then back to i7 920 @4ghz, the only difference I noticed was lower performance.

Perhaps it's a result of a few users using high speed/high latency memory in the i7, whereas Phenom tends to run with lower speed/lower latency memory due to limitations of the memory controller (ie. not liking high speeds).

But like I said, I never noticed any difference only in frame-rates, had I noticed any increase in "smoothness" I probably wouldn't have been so keen to go back to i7 but what I did immediately notice was big dips when playing WoW (which is notoriously CPU limited in the major cities).

In theory yes. Other users here report that this is not the case. Maybe AMds experience with IMCs is paying off here. Otherwise i cant really see why this would be the case. Would love to see some careful analysis for this though!

My 955 is now at 3.7GHz with 1.4volts wont do less, and Cpu NB VID 0.175+Volt increase to get a 2.6GHz HT/NB and 1600Mhz Ram :D. 3.8GHz for my C2 is to much on voltage its a bit of a cliff after 3.7Ghz on the voltage. :( 58c on full load using the H50 with 2 Apache fans.

windows experience rating went up 0.1 cpu and Ram :D now got 7.4 cpu and 7.6 for Ram not that it really means a lot but HT/RAM increase made all the difference :D

have you tried reseating your cpu cooler cause my fenrir gets a lot better temps :confused:surely that h50 should be better.

mine at 3.7 will be max 45c full load and this is with baking raditor on full at side of it :p . idles at 30c

as for the ramp, mine starts at 3.7 and its not really worth going that extra volts for what i gain . think it would do 3.9 at 1.5v but is it worth it .

tried reseating 3 times and even used MX2 I think? it was a mates I cant remember, Only used grain of rice in the centre. H50 was a pig to fit, might be my struggles to fit it. But 3 attemps and only using my own paste lowered the temps a bit.

didnt think it was to bad stock it idles at 33c which is pretty standard I thought?

have you (oc) the HT/NB as well? 2.6Ghz needs a lot of CPU NB voltage and its a heat killer for me anyway. I believe before I overclocked the HT/NB temps where 49/50c im sat surfing the web atm idling at 42c

trying 1.375V on the chip now, seems in my haste to get HT/NB stable I may have left the CPU voltage a step higher. I dont hold much hope on it lasting long on a stress test with such low voltage? but its been 5mins and it hasnt collapsed yet :D now its at 56c
