Well looks like now is a better time than ever to consider an upgrade.. the top scroll wheel appears to be broken. It scrolls but it doesn't click in either direction which means it doesn't function at all :( Not totally sure how this has happened but has had a fair amount of use (100k+ clicks).

I'm debating getting it repaired but at the same time a 7d is looking awfully tempting right now (around 700 used on TP seems like a bargain!)... has anyone had any experience of this issue before on the 40D, will I notice a big difference up to the 7d?? I find the main thing that limits me is the ISO, everything else I have loved about this camera and has served me well :)

Thanks!

The 7D is pretty solid on ISO performance but it uses a very aggressive AA filter that can affect the quality of shots in the wrong lighting conditions. The AF system is a biiiiig upgrade over what you have though and the camera is a fav for canon wildlife photographers who can't afford a 1D mk iv or want the bigger crop factor (1.6x on the 7D).

Its also just had a rather large firmware update on it, improving numerous things including the buffer rates quite drastically.

Personally, I'd bite the bullet and get the 7D, as theres no saying how much the repair bill could potentially be on the 40D.

Awesome post James J thank you :) Any more details about the AA filter, what kind of lighting details it it that screws with this?

I'm going to get the 40D looked at over the weekend, I live round the corner from a Canon repair centre and they can do quotes whilst you wait :D

Basically the fine detail in shadows is far worse when you try and recover it, meaning the exposure has to be right on the camera. This is obviously compared to other camera's, so in a real life setting (instead of just looking at sensor tech) its not the be all and end all. The 60D gives a sharper image compared to the 7D but the later has a far better AF system, so its 1 compromise vs another really.

It certainly sounds like it will be manageable... I guess it will be more of a case of changing the way I take pictures which is never a bad thing!

Think I would rather go for the 7D purely for the magnesium body, slightly less sharper images I can live with :)

Oh it still produces sharp images, its just the fine details at 100% crop might look "muddy" sometimes.

I owned 2x 40Ds since launch and indeed it produces A+ images but it only really stays there if you know where the sensor is most happy and where it fails. The 7D is what one of my best friends use and I find it better than the 40D in many areas especially with the new firmware.

Go for the 7D. The shutter on that 40D is also getting on a bit!

Haha fiiine I'm convinced :p It's payday next Monday so will see what I can get :D woooo new camera time :D
