My Portfolio

Quick look and there is something that doesn't look right about this sentence. I think it could be worded differently, but not sure exactly how...

I've been developing websites for 10 years now, 6 of which have been commercially.

You are right, but I'm not entirely sure how else to word it.

I really need to remove the '6 of which have been commercially', but I'd need to replace it with something.

My name is Mike Hughes and I'm a Web
Developer. This is my Portfolio...

The words aren't wrapping right. Looks weird to read.

My name is Mike Hughes and I'm a Web Developer.
This is my Portfolio...

I've been developing websites for 10 years now, 6 of which have been commercially..

I have been developing websites for 10 years with 6 years commercial experience.

Lose the image, people are judgmental ********, doesnt matter how you look.

"I've been developing websites for 10 years now, and I'm still passionate about it"
the word still is somewhat negative, saying 'and im very passionate about it' would be better.

"I am entirely self-taught and take great pride in delivering products to the highest standards."
'Pride' has connotations of arrogance, id change it to 'care'.

"in delivering products to the highest standards."
'delivering' doesnt sound quite right. 'creating' would be better.

So-
"I am entirely self-taught and take care in creating products to the highest standards."
would be better.

Im a designer myself and its just my opinion.

what doesn't look right is the grammar.... a comma, then the word and , and = wrong

at the very least the sentences should be...

I've been developing websites for 10 years now and I'm still passionate about it. I am entirely self-taught and take great pride in delivering products to the highest standards.

I'd write

"For ten years my passion has been website development. I take exceptional pride and care in delivering my products to the highest of standards.

I may be wrong on this point, but it's my opinion.. Is saying you're self taught a bad thing? will potential employers be actively looking for someone who is self taught or someone who has a bit of paper saying degree...? just a thought, but deffo lose the ", and" line.

Nice portfolio I'm thinking of doing something similar. Do you work for yourself? If so how does that pay?

On a side note a degree definably seems to count up here in Scotland.

Disagree most strongly. Stick with Pride. Care is v.dangerous. It gives the impression of slow pace as if you might faff about for ages trying to hit perfection or going slowly so as not to make a mistake. The environment you will be working is invariably fast paced. The slightest suggestion that you are a slow worker could be fatal to an application.

Most positions in any industry receive far more applications than can be studied in-depth. First pass reviews are slim-down time. One is not looking to select at that point but to reject. Throw out the chaff first is always the approach. The minute I see the word Care or Careful I think slow as in a very careful driver. Truly I would avoid the word Care.

I do a bit of Freelance, but I have a 9-5 job doing it as well.

Some places (wrongly, IMO) like to see a degree, however when we were looking most of the people with degrees were numpties, most probably because they spent the last three years of their life doing everything in theory and not actually gaining real experience.

Those that are self taught and have the experience tend to be the better ones from my experience (bias aside :D).

On your portfolio detail page, imo mthe images scroll through too fast. E.g. on the energy house sample you have some more detailed screenies that scroll too fast for me.

I must be double special then! Since I have a degree and Im self taught :P

I agree with you in part because about 80% of the students on my course had no interest in development outside of uni and spent 4 years doing a degree and still could not write 2 lines of code by the end of it.

On the other hand you get people like me who did the degree because they have a passion for it.

Yes, there is always an exception to the rule and if you have the common sense and experience to accompany your degree, you should do well.
