Hi guys,

Recently completed a build with the following specs:

I5 4690k
Msi 970 GTX
MSI Gaming 5 Z97 Motherboard
8gb HyperX 1866mhz RAM

I used an old OCZ 550W fatality power supply, and I have had a few issues that I believe are PSU related. I hear a strange noise on power down. (That you can listen to HERE) and also times where my keyboard is completely unresponsive, until you re-plug it in. People have suggested that the PSU is at fault and best I replace it. Even though my system is still working okay, I would feel more comfortable with a new PSU.

OCZ still have a little info on the PSU on their site HERE

Now I trust OCUK forum users opinions, so would appreciate some help here. I have around £60-80 to spend, what would you suggest?

I have looked at the Corsair CX600M and EVGA Supernova 650W G1, but I really do not know much about PSU's.

ps - I am a big fan of Modular and Semi-Modular PSU's

Waiting a week my be a good idea. None of the Superflower units are on the this week only deals at the moment which sould mean that some of them are on offer when the new deals start. Selected models are on offer roughly every other week and the offers run from Wednesday to Wednesday.

A quality 500w psu would be more than enough for your pc and still have plenty left over. Unfortunately OCUK are lacking in modular psu's of this size so pretty much the only choice is a 650w unit or more. When buying a psu ignore the wattage quoted, ie 550w. 650w etc. That is the total power it is supposed to deliver. The power on the 12v rail is where it matters. Take your OCZ Fatality 550w for example. There are two versions of this psu both built by Sirtec. The first has dual 12v rails of 25A but limits the max power on the 12v rail to 450w due to weak internals. The second has a single 41.3A 12v rail giving a max of 495w. The rest is made up on the minor rails where it doesnt matter so much. Your 550w psu wouldn't actually power a pc than needs 550w due to the weak 12v rail. All manufacturers do this (even Seasonic), usually on the cheaper units but also on more expensive units. Always disregard the total power and look up what a psu is actually capable of on the 12v rail. This is a excellent source for information including who actually makes the unit, strength of the 12v rail(s) and links to reviews. Since OCZ went bust they removed them from the database for some reason but you can see the OCZ information here.

Here are some psu's for you to consider:-

Superflower Leadex Gold 750w £84.95 (for some reason cheaper than the 650w at the moment)
EVGA Supernova G1 £69.95 Quad 12v rails with a max of 636w built by FSP with a 10 year warranty.

The Antec Truepower Classic units are excellent vaue for money. They are high quality Seasonic built units but the downside is that they are not modular. Hard to beat for the price though.

Thank you pastymuncher for your knowledge! Help's people like me out when it comes to PSU's!

The Antec TruePower classic is brilliant value for money agreed.

If the OP does want modular, try this. Seasonic made, and fully modular, 120 mm LED fan that you can turn off and coloured anti vibration strips.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Antec EDGE 550w 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular Power Supply £69.95
Total : £79.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Thank's i'll take a look. Is there decent length on the cables for the Antec? I have a mid tower case (NZXT s340) and my current PSU cable struggles to stretch for the top motherboard connection.
