Hi guys,

I was just about to start looking at overclocking my Q6600 and was familiarising myself with some of the applications you guys use to overclock and I notice that CoreTemp is showing my frequency as 1600 (266.67 x 6.0)

I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L and I have switched off what i thought was the right setting in the bios to stop this from happening but it still persists. I'm using Vista x64

any ideas?

Turn of speedstep.

Clocking
1. Make sure that you have the latest chipset drivers and flash the board to the most recent bios version
2. On the main bios screen press Ctrl+F1 to open the advanced options within the menus
3. In the Advanced Bios Features Menu, Disable all of the following: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E), CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2), CPU EIST Function
4. In the PC Health Status menu, set the FAN Speed Control Method to "Legacy" & FAN Speed Control Mode to "PWM" to maintain highest speed
5. Go into the MB Intelligent Tweaker (MIT) menu at the bottom of the page, set the System voltage control to "Manual"
6. These boards have a default VDIMM of 1.8v, set the VDIMM to co-ordinate with your ram. The Geil I have is specced as 2.1v so I have mine set to +0.3v
7. Set the MCH Voltage to +0.1v
8. Set the FSB Voltage to +0.1v
9. Set the VCORE to 1.45v - Please be aware that this will increase temps!
10. Set the CPU Host Clock Control to "Enable"
11. Set the System Memory Multiplier to "2x"
12. You're set to go, just increase the System bus Frequency to Overclock
13. I would reccommend that you use Intels TAT to monitor temps

Soething like that.

Still happens when you switch if off for some reason, when it's loaded it'll go up to 2.4Ghz, nothing to worry about

Thanks for the help guys.

I only want to go upto 3ghz really so would I still need to set the VCORE to 1.45?

My cooling should be able to cope so i;ve been told by a member on here when i bought the cooler.

Also, my leadtek card has overclocking software for XP. Is there any way to overclock my card in Vista?

Not sure if the Gigabyte mobo is much different to my abit IP35 Pro but I left the CPU voltage at stock voltage which for my Q6600 is between 1.20-1.22 volts to get to 3ghz, all I did was turn up the MCH voltage to the next step (very small increase) and all so far is well :)

Did you find it necessary to up the voltage on the MCH? As I have not touched mine and my quads at 3.4ghz

Honestly I just tapped it up a notch before upping the FSB as Ive read in a lot of places that its likely to need a small bump but I havent had time to check if it needs it, thats going to be my job this weekend to stress test everything and check out voltages etc to see if I can lower any of them :)

This is quite funny. You want to turn off Speedstep but can't, while I want to turn it on but can't because it stops me from booting.

Will I need to down the memory settings to cope with the upped FSB? I'm still learning about this clocking business and finding it quite confusing :)

And how much does clocking decrease the life of a processor?

I'm still learning myself, but you can set your memory frequency manually, to, say, 800Mhz (Or whatever your RAM runs at), so then the FSB changes wont affect the memory. That way you are only testing the CPU.

Of course if this is wrong someone will correct it.:D

As for the life, I'm sure somebody said a processor should last 10+ years, but overclocking raises heat, so in theory it wont last that long but will you be keeping it for 10 years?;)
