As title have a netgear DG834N, and my main PC is connected to it via LAN cable, also use a macbook on wifi, now this all works fine and is rock solid when its just me in the house.

When house mate A gets home and turns on there laptop (windows 7 HP thing), 1 in 20 times it will 'cut off' my main pc, the lan status reads as network connection error, no internet (little yellow ! symbol on network thing next to clock), the only way to fix it is to either reboot the router or turn its power off and turn back on again - which is annoying as its 3 floors down in the front room.

Now, when house mate B gets in and starts using there PC, a netbook with windows XP on, it disconnects my main PC EVERY ****** TIME  and I have to run down stairs and restart it again, then all the PC's work jus fine and no problems.

Its defo when they start there PC's as over xmas when it was just me there it never dropped the connection once, at all.

WHY ON EARTH is it doing this ? any ideas? Im running the latest firmware.

Use to use a Netgear DG834 never had any problems with heat, try putting the plastic feet on and stand it up right, will run cooler. Are yous all using the same OS or not? I had a problem with the lan drivers Realtek, reinstalled the Win7 standard driver problem solved it took a while till Realtek sorted it out no probs now.

The both of yous try doing a system restore point to before Xmass before doing anything else, if that does not work start from scartch with your network, there's plenty of guide's on the net how to set up your network google it.

sounds like it may be giving the other two pc's your ip address, in the process kicking you off.
try to access the setup page & give each pc it's own ip address.

Yeah its already on its stand, so shouldnt be over heating :/

Yeah tried that and have had a fixed IP on my machine for ages now, still no difference :( , im thinking of down grading the firmware a different 834n i had ages ago used the older pre 1.2x firmwares and seemed stable, thats all I have left to try now , any other pointers ? :(, thanks for your ideas so far :)

It would be worth running ipconfig /all on all the windows machines to see what IP address and DNS address each has after the problem occurs. It may be that your IP address is OK but the DNS is getting buggered, although I confess not to know why that would be. If it does turn out to be DNS you could add a second (public) DNS server to your configuration so that even if the one in the router poops on you, you can still resolve names.

Another thing to consider is whether any of your house mates are establishing VPNs. These are notorious for being handled badly by routers.
