Hey people, I have got my first semi-pro MMA fight coming up soon and the nerves are starting to tingle just a little bit.

I know we have boxers and thai lads etc on here, has anyone competed and have any advice?

I've competed in Judo tournies, but this involves getting punched and kicked in the head hard lol.

Any advice welcome.

It will be video'd and I'll link everyone up win, lose or draw.

The rules for this fight are standing kicks and punches, no knees or elbows. On the ground no strikes to the head, which sucks as GNP is something I love and it sets up submissions.

Id rather do this though and get a feel for it before stepping up to pro rules.

As for Judo it's awesome for MMA, throws, general throw defence and balance, submissions and control on the ground due to hold downs.

Depending on the opponent, very useful. If semi-pro means no ground and pound and the opponent has been boxing for so many years then clearly you want to go for a takedown :)

I've seen people get takedowns but then they have no idea what to do next. :p

Just make sure you are well equipped :D

Yeah I will be going for the takedown and sub, my standup has come on leaps and bounds from when I started, but I will always be at home on the ground.

Training has been going excellent though and I am in the best condition of my life, so cardio shouldn't be a problem. Unless nerves get to me and I dump adrenaline, but can't stop that haha

I don't know the name of the person im fighting let alone his style! All i know is he will be 63kg same as me.

One of the people from my gym fought at this promotions last event, they have people filming it and put a DVD out. I was on holiday an missed his fight but watched the DVD last night, they did a decent job of filming so I should have a decent video for you all.

Ive got my debut boxing bout tomorrow, heh. The only advice I can give is make sure you are in the best possible physical condition you can be in when the time comes, it's the only thing that's going to give you confidence in yourself really. Give it your all in training between now and then and you will have a fight with no regrets no matter what the decision :)

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I take it you can only do large joint locks? i.e arm bar, leg lock etc? No small wrist locks?
63kg, blimey that's light. Lol, can't remember when i last weighed 63kg?
No matter how fit you are groundwork is always gonna be ballbaggingly exhausting, so knuckle him first and knock the wind out his sails.
Good luck mate :D

Yeah no small joint manipulation, I think I can get down to 60kg for my next fight! I am only 5ft5 though.

Groundwork and clinch work are ridiculously exhausting, but him being a Boxer will find it a lot tougher as he won't be used to it.

Not long now less than a week.

I just got back, I won in 1:36 seconds by guillotine. He landed one punch on me and he cut my nose up good with just that one.

I have 2 photos Ill scan an put up tomorrow, the video will follow as soon as I have it.

Woooooo buzzing.

Congratz mate!

My guess is that he shot in leaving his head out for the guillotine. :D Eagerly awaiting the video.

I shot in took him down, ground and pounded from side control then took mount and did more of the same. Went back to side control and baited him to get up then guillotined.

He weighed in at 69kg instead of 64kg, also the rules got changed and elbows and knees were allowed standing, and ground an pound was allowed. That was good for me though so wasn't bothered.

So buzzing.

I don't think he was very happy at all he only landed 1 punch, did cut my nose with it though and I can feel it today.

I really can't wait to see the DVD, I can't really remember exactly how it all went down to much adrenaline.

I am small yeah haha.

It wasn't on at all really and we are going to speak to him about it, I wanted the rules it was changed too anyway. But had been training using the stated rules so was a bit messed up, but hey I got the win.

It may take a while as I have to wait for them to release the DVD as it's properly recorded, but once I have it i'll put my fight up.

My bird did try and record it but she was jumping around and screaming so much it's a bit too blair witch.
