My son bought a pc from OCUk in Jan this year and it really struggles to play any decent games, he is a big FPS player and is also into video editing and I am wondering if anything can be upgraded easily to improve it greatly.

Spec from the order history is:

Titan 8200a Punisher" AMD Bulldozer FX-6 6100 3.30GHz @ 4.00GHz DDR3 Six Core System
ATI Radeon HD 5450 SILENT 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card

I cannot find any links to the machine bought as it's no longer available.

With that 5450 it would struggle to play games, a better graphics card would greatly help it but what can be recommended would depend entirely on the power supply in the system.

If it is the same as is mentioned in this thread then it depends on how much you are looking to spend.

Thanks, I guess the only way to answer that is to open up the pc?
And if I am to open it up, is any other information needed while I am at it?

Make sure you get the brand, model and wattage of the PSU.

On the other hand, how much are you willing to spend to upgrade the GPU?

I will make sure I post as much info as possible (I didn't realise the PSU would be so importamt).
I am not sure what he wants to spend, but I thought maybe £150 would be a reasonable amount, but I would rather get the right product if people suggest more would be sensible (Don't want more than required though).

While I am posting here, I would like to build myself a setup at some point that would be able to play BF3 on ultra (seems like that spec would play any other games available). What sort of budget would I be looking at? (I have a 23" LG 3D capable monitor, mouse, keyboard & dvd drive). Storage for other things is already sorted as we have a home server and media centres already.

+1 for the HD 7850 IceQ X

IF you have to upgrade the PSU you can save £20 on this
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-179-MS&groupid=701&

It does have half the memory, but 1 GB will be fine for most games at teh setting suitable for that card/CPU combo. And it might be a bit louder under load, but I doubt it's a big difference.

What we need to know about the PSU either the make & Model or the total +12 V output.

Will get the info tomorrow as we had a custom desk built to fit his pc, xbox, HDpvr into and it's a pain to remove it all at this time of night once the pc is fitted.
In regards to a PC for me, am I over doing it wanting BF on ultra settings for gaming a few times a week?

Well it would be more future proof. Maybe something like £700 then if you still want a PC that can last for a good few years playing games.

you could play bf3 on ultra with a cheap used x58 system and a 7950/7970 graphic card if you didnt wanna spend too much, otherwise a z68/z77 system would do fine imo

It looks like it could be but without the paperwork I can't be sure but that is the correct case and optical drive by just looking at the pc. Would love to go and pull it all out now but too many people asleep in the house :(

Just buy the HD7850 dude. :)

Look at this. http://www.hwcompare.com/12096/radeon-hd-5450-vs-radeon-hd-7850/

the 7850 is 1000% better than the HD5450 :P

The HD7850 will be able to run BF3 on at least high settings with some settings on Ultra with that setup. My GTX480 is only very slightly more powerful than the HD7850, and i can play it maxed out. Mainstream games run at 200 - 300fps, and more demanding games like Crysis and Battlefield 3 run at 40 - 60fps. The only game I can't max out is Metro 2033 (which I play on high).

I have and HD5450 in my server, and it cant to anything. It is terrible (and my one has twice the memory). I bought it for £14.99 to output to the display, and that is all i bought it for. But i tried some games on it through curiosity, and it cant even run free to play steam games like Team Fortress 2 or Gotham City Imposters on minimum settings at 640x480 resolution at over 30fps, and that was with the card overclocked as far as i could push it.

Mainstream titles like Skyrim and Assassins creed got about 12fps on minimum settings at 640x480, and crysis wouldn't even load up.

It is designed for people who won't be doing any gaming. It is just about good enough to stream 1080P video, and not much else.
