My Spec (£1500-£1700 to spend!

Aye, I agree - it's old and has a lot of problems with it [expect a lot of RMA's]
As Chimercal suggested get one of the newer motherboards, if you're getting a 4870X2 I suggest getting a Crossfire supported motherboard.

+1

dont get 4 1GB sticks
dont bother with the raptor

Why, it has to be the fastest drive out at the moment and will provide a noticeable difference, especially if he uses it as an OS only drive.

Yeah you could easily fit a better one in the spec.

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 would still come under the 1700 limit.

If it's a games only rig i would go for the E6600 E0 instead.

Apart from tee gfx card this system will be virtually silent.

TBH I wouldn't get 8Gig unless you use rendering or other memory intensive stuff.
The mobo should come with all the cables you need.

What a budget. Given that you are off to Uni though I would save some of that to spend in freshers week. No young ladies are gonna be impressed that you have a computer worth £2000, plus you will be gutted if it gets nicked or you spill beer on it :)

I would take the above spec. Reduce the RAM to 4GB (as suggested). Take of one of the 1TB Hard disks till needed. Use a single 4870 as it will happily run any current game at the full res of your monitor. Swap the Blueray Burner for just a reader. Change the motherboard for a cheaper model such as the £75+VAT Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (any P45 with crossfire support would be ideal as you can double up GPU's when the 4870 can be had for £70 in 8 months time). Finally I would reduce the PSU to a model at more like £50-£70 such as the Corsair TX 650W (£55 + VAT).

By my calcs that will save around £620 of the price and will still give an immense system. The only difference that you will see performance wise will be the graphics but the 4870X2 just isn't necessary for current games and by the time it is the cost will be much more reasonable :)

That all depends on the res and ofcause the game.

this spec here is what im getting delivered in 2 weeks and hands down beats the spec you have come up with: This is getting built for me too with a good warranty!
The wholew thing has come to £1650. Just ask if you want anymore ifo. This sytem i think is a winner! for the price anyway.

Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition to use all the ram (32 bit only uses upto 3gb ram)

wheres that from?

i would say it is necessary at a very high res. sorry but iv missed where he said what size monitor hes using.

Earlier on he says he has a 24" Dell, only game that stretches the card slightly at 1920x1200 is Crysis. Personally I would rather knock the graphics / resolution down a notch on one game and save a few hundred pounds, especially if my annual income was a £4000 loan and some minimum wage part time work.

That said though, there were plenty of people at uni in my day who just had Mum & Dad pay for everything so had no idea of the value of money, sure that is still the case now (no implication at the poster intended).

It all depends on what FPS you prefer to game at - i prefer 100+ and currently find crysis sluggish even at low res.

Glad to hear that, irks me when people get given so much cash they act fools. All I can say then is that most people will have far more fun with an additional £600 party budget for Uni than they will get from a few more FPS on a computer game.

I have always had a decent gaming rig, but kept it in budget. By buying the best value performance options close to release (for instance the 4850 Pro now, the Q6600 when it dropped to £150, the E6300 on release) they cost around £150 / major component. When the next big thing comes out at £150, the last one is still worth roughly half that on ebay so I trade up. I probably spend about £450 a year on my main rig, but it is always up to date and I get about £200 back from ebay.

No matter how much you spend now it will be eclipsed for half the price in about 6 months. The more you spend the more you have lost in a shorter period of time. 12 months ago a £1700 system would probably have included a pair of 8800GTX in SLI at a cost of around £700 when you could have bought a 8800GTS at £180. Does 12 months of slightly higher FPS really justify that £500 difference cos they are both worth buttons now :)

thanks for the advice.
noticed your from barnard castle :) im from bishop auckland

Just over the hill then ;)

And if you are quick the Corsair 1000w psu's are on offer this week for only £138 - A bargain and puts them within your budget again.

I would get the above but instead of a Q6600, i would buy a second hand QX9650 from the you know what. They can be had for about 350 and will provide a size able improvement when overclocked than any other processor (cept it's big brother) today.

Respect the fact you have made your own choice - but if your like most people you will start out with a modest clock and then you will want to push it more and more. The latest Q6600's are for the most part high vid poor clockers and are certainly no longer the 3.4Ghz + chips that we have come to love in the past. Do yourself a huge favor and go for something that will eat up the latest games - perhaps a E8500 E0 @ 4.0Ghz + ?
