Right my system has the following fans running

Cosmos S case:

250mm side fan - its quiet - intake

1 x front mounted 120mm cooler master fan - intake

1 x rear mounted 120mm Red wing fan 19db speed setting - extraction

3 x top mounted 120mm Red wing fan 19db speed setting - extraction

1 x cpu cooler mounted 120mm Red wing fan 19db speed setting

All fans are set at 19db or less. When working out the noise would you add all the 19db together or would all of them running in theory be no louder than 19db.

If so why dose my PC sound louder than my washing machine…. Ok not really but it is very loud im beginning to think that it is the graphics card GTX280. are there any efficient quiet ways of cooling this card without water?

T-rad2 or similar with a silent-ish 120mm fan - another Red Wing [if it's any good] or a Noctua NF-S12, which I have found to be inaudible at 500RPM.

My 4850 never gets above 57 degrees with that setup. Abd I can't hear it.

You'll need to check compatability though - the TRad doesn't support the 260/280, for example....

I am not able to advise, as I am a beginner, but what sort of temps are you getting - 7 fans ought to be moving a lot of air, and maybe could be slowed down further - Akasa do a fan cooler that costs under a tenner......

Also, is your case vibrating in any way - I hear that blutac can be of use if it is.
How about dist filters - if there are any, are they clogged ?
Graphics cards are something I know even less than nothing about, but they do seem to run hot, so maybe a better cooler on it ?

As I understand it even with no single fan above 19db the noise level increases for every extra fan you add, looking at your case you've got 7 fans running so the overall noise level will be well above 19db.

Your GTX280 should only really spin up in games.

Nyaha! Look what Uncle Raithy found for you!

Supports GTX280.

Stick a 120mm Noctua fan on there, jobs a good 'un.

OCUK don't supply it, might be worth contacting their sales team to see if they are likely to get it in? I can't see it being a slow seller from what google has told me about the noise the GTX280 makes....

Edited to say that seven fans sound like overkill - you tried unhooking a few to see how it affects temps and noise?

If I were you then I'd be tempted to lose the side fan and 2 of the top fans as they're really not that necessary. Try doing a comparision with the system as it is and then with the fans I've suggested disabled.

I really can't see the loss of those affecting your temps much if at all.

As has been suggested, a T-rad2 would probably make a good difference to noise levels (with suitable fans).

the reason i thought it was the graphics card is that the system is quiet up untill windows starts then you can hear something spin up, but my main grpe is when playing a game in the evening the card is so loud.

will try taking a couple fans off but temps are so nice with all these:) 28,28,26,26 at idle and 36,36,32,32 whilst playing a game and burning a cd...

and the other half always has the heating up real high.... at least im cool next to the pc lol...

i have been disconnecting fans to see if the sound level changes.....not really its got to be the Graphics card so whats the best passive cooler for these? dont really want another fan or i could move one i suppose

The doubling of sound intensity adds 3db (the scale is logrithmic). Eight 19db fans should give an intensity of 29db (1 fan to 2, 3db - 2 fans to 4, 3db, - 4 fans to 8, another 3db).

If you have something breaking up the flow of air or a dodgy bearing it will much more noticeable. If it is the G/c fan i would look to replace it with a larger quality fan rather than a passive block.

thanks for that reply checked my cheap 750w psu and yes it was that fan totally forgot that there was one in there thanks.

changed the psu for a red wing job done.

all 7 fans plus 250mm side fan running real quite now.:D

q6600 now running @ 3.707ghz on air idle (internet/listening to music) 39,39,37,37 in a warm room.

used intel thermal anaylsis tool 100% cpu usage temps got to 76c which im quite happy with for running 3.7ghz on air

Sometimes it can be quite difficult to track down the offending item in a large machine to try and quieten it down, and it can sometimes be the PSU, which can sometimes be overlooked, but not by the OC'ing, knowing we all need a big PSU to stop any power problems arising ;)

I have an Antec 1200, which also has 7 case fans (3 at the back, 3 at the front, 1 on the top) have an 850W supply and its quite audible, but not unbearable, considering im OC'ing my i7 to 4.2 there is no real surprise why ;)
