My turn for a linux thread

OMG its working.!!

Two clients, 100% cpu, on low.

Then when LFS/EVE Starts, it gives up CPU time.

YAY! :D
Just trying to figure out if running 2 SMP clients will get you more PPD then running 1 SMP and 1 GPU...

i worked out that if i put 2 SMP clients into linux i get about 13-14m a frame which is just slightly quicker than running just one client at full speed and getting about 8 minutes a frame

i think i'll just run 2 SMP clients on LOW priority i think will get me a smaller incrase in PPD?

I'd like to know what Mr concorde has done, he seems to be having similar problems to me. I've even braved a post in linux forum that has been ignored apart from our Dunc

Forgotten the exact settings but

NAT settings and then a BT DNS server in the Ubuntu Network settings.

Im away from the PC atm but I think that was it.

I finally found out how to get the DNS server address to stay put! now i'm crunching one smp client on an X2 4400. what do folks do with the remaining 20% on each core?

Run a normal or gpu client.

yup on an X2 that's pretty much all you can do since a 2nd SMP client would push you past the preferred deadlines which isn't good for the project.

My GPU client only gets 10-15% from watching task manager but it's actually enough to run the GPU client at about half speed getting me around 400PPD from that alone :)

How do I get it shared on the workgroup then? Using NAT in vmware. Got samba installed and the folder set as shared. I changed the name of the thing as it was "conflicting" when it was localhost (Administration -> Networking. General tab - Host name to "smp". Hosts tab - changed 127.0.0.1's alias to "smp").

It appears fine in my network places. Can't read the directory though. Double clicking the machine in network places (to browse it) results in a login box. Username/pass don't work in it.

you need to set up a username and password for Samba (can use the same as your Ubuntu login - just need to put them in the right place)

full instructions are here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/install-samba-server-on-ubuntu/

How can I do a minimalist install?

I have a 74Gb Raptor here and FS9+10, HL2, Far Cry, Medal of Honor, BF2, CoD2 etc and its filling up...

Is it possible to do a sub 1Gb install to run SMP?

Cheers :)

use the server (console) version instead of the desktop (GUI) version?

Depending on the type of Ubuntu install [Desktop/Server] it can be as small as 110MB. However that it very minimalist. A minimal Desktop version can be installed in about 300-400MB.

Excellent good job Rich. Reading it with fahmon now. Much more convenient way of checking the log if nothing else :)

Next question, how can I add the projects? Can't be hard to add the smp ones manually can it? Thanks again :)

Edit: the unofficial fahmon does it, hooray! :D

SMP Client on AMD64 Ubuntu

Code:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
cd ~
mkdir foldingathome
cd foldingathome
wget [url]http://ra.vendomar.ee/~ivo/finstall[/url]
chmod +x finstall
./finstall smp
Then answer the prompts as you see fit.

Finally after the long bit about setting up as a service
Code:
./installService
And you're done :)
didn't work for me :(

nm think I've sorted it
