My upgrade path for 8700k

I'm currently using a binned delidded 8700k @ 5.1 on a Z370 board. It feels like CPU's are being and have been fired out every couple of months for the last year or so from Intel and AMD and I honestly can't keep up anymore with whats hot and whats not.

I've been on the Z370 for a while now since day one launch and want to keep my eye on the horizon for what's next. My 8700k sits at about 60% usage during gaming so not stretched yet but I like to keep my gear up to date. Should I hold out for DDR5 whenever that will be?

I've just upgraded my monitor to the new UW LG offering and my 2080ti will do for now also.

Early adoption of DDR5 will likely be a bad time.

If all you use the machine for is gaming then that 6 core at that clock speed will (hopefully) last you a good few years longer. Your next upgrade imo would be a 10/12 core CPU that offers similar or slightly better single-threaded performance and will be a decent boost in the increasing number of titles that can make use of extra cores.

I agree with this, it took a while for DDR4 to start gaining traction and getting the latency down. High Mhz, but the latency was so bad that they were slower than good DDR3 kits.

Stick with what you have?? We coming to the end of DDR4 now. In the case of AM5,if AMD further increases core count,DDR5 will have more bandwidth for all the extra cores. I expect DDR4 will have limitations.

Agreed, I wouldn't look at DDR5 until about 2023 when any issues are ironed out. Early motherboards will probably only support initial slower DDR5, if wait for 2nd or 3rd gen. In short I think my plan to review things on 2025 is about right. I don't think I'd think any differently with an 8700K if it was mainly for gaming.

no reason to upgrade yet, a 5ghz 8700k still holds up well enough.

As someone who went from a 8700k to a 3950x - the gaming performance is the same the only difference is the CPU usage went from 50% to 15%.

You should hold onto the 8700k if you only game, for at least 1 more year I'd say.
