Using the latest operating system with the most up to date drivers has always been a weakness of mine. Its just something that has always driven me. However for the first time i find myself at the crossroads of this addiction.

~Windows Vista~

Now i just bought a new machine recently:

3800x2 AM2
8800GTX
MSI NFORCE 550
2GB PC6400 CORSAIR TWINX
CIBOX 19INCH TFT
COOLERMASTER CASE AND 720WTT PSU
160GB SAMSUNG SATA300 8MB HD

So i guessed that maybe it was time to upgrade from daudling old xp to the new shiny vista.

Now dont get me wrong, i like Vista. I like the way Ms are taking the os itself but when as i have found to my horror i will be giving up at least 10% in games perfomance for the privilage of things like dreamscape (love). Well i cant justify it. There are no DX10 games out, well not true ones anyway, there are a couple of games recieving DX10 patches like Call Of Juarez.

I guess im comfounded really that im wanting to downgrade for the first time in my life. The fact is, once you get past vista's nice shiny look, you will find that it is more infact a botch job than anything else. Things like WinFX that eventually became net 3.0, which didnt make it into vista. Well it kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Im sure for new users that Vista will make home computing a more viable choice, because of things like Vista Media Center which btw is one of the reasons why i like Vista.

So my vote....

Stick with XP until Vista Matures

Guess you don't want to play Halo 2 then?

As said by the previous poster .net is in there...

He's talking about titles which actually use DX10 not ones made Vista exclusive for other reasons .

Like everyone that bought into the DX10 hype its a shame more hasn't come out for it yet. But my DX9 performance is getting better for every new driver build and I'm very impressed with vista. Stability wise its been superb for me and i'm yet to find anything that won't run on it yet...

6 weeks in and i've not once been tempted to switch back to XP - overall, wp MS im impressed

Surely you new this before you payed out for vista ......As this about every other thread on here says about vista being slower for games then XP...

Only thing i don't really like about vista now is the way it gives me so much of an headache to navigate to certian things that were only 1 click away on xp. Changing how you go back & forth or through folders is also an headache.

It's a shame they couldn't offer the old way of browsing through my folders :(

Is that an Order?

I don't care if it dosent work on your pc, works on mine fine, so im going to run Vista thanks.

My PC is a mishmash of your pc (better cpu, slightly weaker gfx, better other components etc) and have no issues at all with Vista ultimate OEM - in fact it's the best £110 I ever spent on a piece of software and will never look back at XP again.

heres my view on vista its a great OS, it runs a lot faster and smoother then xp. all the games i've played on vista run same speed as in xp. ive not had 1 single problem with it. yes i won't be able to get a driver for my DEC-3000-s but that isn't vista fault..

I enjoy using Vista also, but is it not without its bugs. There are only so many issues which can be blamed on 3rd parties. I have completely ditched XP now, not even bothering to dual boot, I need the space.

Here are a few bugs which I have come across and can remember:

Folder views change during a reboot, for example, the games folder will display as large icons one minute, then next they shift to details, possibly after a reboot.

Vista loses network connectivity after between 12-16 hours of being on. The only way to resolve (other than reboot) is to stop, then start the Network connectivity service.

Vista will not recognize 4 gb of Ram correctly. It will either stall or not boot at all with it installed (possibly BIOS/Windows related, works fine in XP, linux)

Vista changed the way sound is processed so AC3 wont work (possibly driver issue, may get better as these mature)

I can live with the above until fixes are found and generally enjoy using the OS. I get good FPS with Nvidia drivers and gaming is a pleasure on Vista, due to the "Games" folder.

I don't use Media centre, seems a waste of time to me when you get the perfectly good Media Player and I can locate and play files much quicker. Winamp is the only solution for music for me, I love its nice uncomplicated, long list of music, I find it a nightmare trying to find stuff with Media centre. I think Media centre should have been searchable.

That's a bit random! But all the other things you mentioned are easily driver or BIOS issues.

It's designed for sitting back and using from about 10ft - like a TV. And you're meant to use the remote to operate it. If you do this, it's brilliant. I have one PC that pretty much only runs the Media Center app.

And it is searchable - Music: Search.

Can you play Ac3 encoded files through your S/Pdiff and get full 5.1 surround?

Do you leave your PC on for days at a time connected to p2p via az or utorrent?

Just because they dont affect you, doesnt mean they are not bugs or issues. The world does not begin and end with you!
