Not sure how many people care but I thought I'd share my weekend with you. Its probably something most people don't know about and it was one of the best weekends of the year so far!

Basically its a mountain bike race: I was in a team of four blokes, we take it in turn doing a lap of a course specially made for this event. It starts at 2pm Saturday and runs till 2pm Sunday (someone on the course the whole time).

I turned up on Friday night and set up camp with the rest of my mates, mostly old friends from my uni days. There were 3 all male teams and a couple doing the thing SOLO! Crazy people, they are both incredibly dedicated and have an amazing fitness/health regime.

The race started with some fine weather, I was up third and managed the 7.8 mile course in about 45 minutes. I was frustrated when no one turned up to take over so I went out for a second lap - apparently I only just missed him!

I kept my lap 'in lieu' until the sun went down and the rest of the team went onto doubles so we could get at least some sleep, I might have managed two hours in the bigger gaps I had.

It was an amazing event with lots of freebies and a fantastic atmosphere, you can see the results here (we were the Nubike slackers - doesn't like Firefox much) and the mountain mayhem site. Can't wait for the next one!

Here's me finishing our team's last lap, that beer tasted sooooo good!

Sort of thing I would love to do if my health was a bit better and my bike didn't keep breaking! :D

Really envy you actually, looks like you had a great weekend. :)

Some of my best memories are of days out biking in the countryside with mates over the years!*

Not as sad as it sounds! LOL :D

How much preparation did you have to put in to get to fitness for it?

Also, how many hours did you cycle, and was it kind of relaxed(or do people do it at relaxed pace as well), or were you going for position at full pace?

My frame cost me 50quid, although it is a high standard frame, just pretty old (insured for a grand). Most bikes were probably in the region og 900-1500 at a guess, you could do it on a 4-500 quid bike, but obviously if you're pushing it harder/faster you need a more expensive one. I would probably break a bike that cost less than 500 quid, but I saw people riding cheaper ones without any problem. But in short, cheap AND expensive bikes break a lot.

Wrt to training, well, not much! I have a pretty good standard of fitness with riding and regular running, we were a 'slackers' team so we didn't go mental. I'm still very proud of the consistency I managed and the position we obtained (99/245), Usually my teams fall a bit lower!
