My girlfriend and I are house-sitting for my mum while she's away on holiday with my sisters, and we notice the house phone has some messages on it so we duly listen to them in case anything important crops up.
The last message is from my granny, sounding sad she tells my mum she regrettably can't see her on the following saturday because Corran (my grandad) died that morning and she'll be at the funeral that thursday. In shock, we listen to the message again to be sure. Yes, "Corran died this morning" she says.
After absorbing the shock I set about informing my family, who being away on holiday know nothing of this. My mum is distraught, even more so at the prospect of telling my two younger sisters their beloved grandfather has passed away.
I then decided to find out more by contacting my uncle to pass on my condolences and ask about the funeral. He informs me that My grandfather is still alive, but thanks me regardless as his Uncle Colum has indeed passed away........
****
I get a hold of my brother in time, who berates me for sending him on "an emotional rollercoaster", but my mum's phone is busy and I can't get through, so I leave a message hoping she is just out of service. She was, in fact, leaving a heartfelt message for my gran, and upon receiving my text faced the task of leaving a second "oops, he isn't dead then" message.
Just happened and I thought it funny enough to share
I saved the message to defend myself upon their return too, although when we played it back we could hear my grandad in the background and my gran kept saying "we".
